πŸ›οΈ Start at the Former Residence
Begin your exploration at the Former Residence of Mao Zedong, located at 1 Yan'an Beilu, where Mao lived from 1937 to 1940. The site is open daily from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, and entry is free with your passport. Insider tip: arrive before 10:00 AM to avoid tour groups and have the courtyard nearly to yourself.

πŸ–ΌοΈ Browse the Revolutionary Museum
The Yan'an Revolutionary Museum, just a 10-minute walk north at 13 Yan'an Beilu, houses over 30,000 artifacts from the Communist Party's Yan'an period. Admission is free, but you need to reserve online a day in advance using your passport number. The museum is closed on Mondays, so plan accordingly.

🍜 Slurp Local Noodles
For an authentic taste of Yan'an, head to Lao Yan'an Noodle House at 45 Yan'an Beilu, famous for its hand-pulled noodles with lamb and wild herbs. A hearty bowl costs around 25 RMB, and the shop is open from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM. Try the 'yangyu cha' (potato mash) on the side, a local comfort food you won't find elsewhere.

🚢 Stroll the Pedestrian Street
Yan'an Beilu's pedestrian section, stretching from the museum to the Yanhe River, is perfect for an evening walk. The street is closed to traffic from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM, and you'll find street performers, souvenir stalls, and locals practicing tai chi. Keep an eye out for the old stone bridge at the north end, a favorite photo spot.

🎭 Catch a Revolutionary Opera
The Yan'an Grand Theater at 88 Yan'an Beilu hosts nightly performances of 'The White-Haired Girl' and other revolutionary operas. Tickets range from 80 to 280 RMB and can be bought at the box office from 2:00 PM onward. Even if you don't speak Chinese, the elaborate staging and live orchestra make it worthwhile.

πŸ›οΈ Shop for Local Crafts
Pick up handmade paper-cuts and embroidered cloth shoes at the Yan'an Folk Art Center, located at 102 Yan'an Beilu. Prices start at 15 RMB for small paper-cuts and 120 RMB for embroidered shoes. The center is open from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and the staff are happy to explain the symbolism behind each design.

β˜• Relax at a Themed Cafe
For a break, duck into 'Red Star Cafe' at 56 Yan'an Beilu, a cozy spot decorated with vintage propaganda posters and serving decent espresso for 20 RMB. It's open from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM and has free Wi-Fi, making it a good place to recharge. Try their 'Yan'an latte' with a hint of local jujube syrup.

πŸŒƒ Enjoy Evening River Views
End your day with a walk along the Yanhe River promenade, which runs parallel to Yan'an Beilu. The riverbank is beautifully lit after dark, and you'll see locals dancing and flying kites. For a nightcap, head to the rooftop bar at the Yan'an Hotel (1 Yan'an Beilu), where cocktails start at 45 RMB and the view of the illuminated pagoda is superb.

Good list, though the noodle shop gets packed after 12:30, so go early or late. Skip the cafe and grab a bowl of 'yangyu cha' from the stalls near the bridge instead, it's cheaper and better.

Shanghai hidden gems beyond the Bund?

Heading to Shanghai in two months and want to skip the tourist traps. Any underrated spots or local favorites i should check out? Heading to Shanghai in two months and want to skip the tourist traps. Any underrated spots or local favorites i should check out?

honestly skip the bund crowds and head to the former french concession around wukang road. grab a coffee at some random lane spot, the whole area has these old lane houses that feel way more real than the skyline. also check out the rock bund art museum near the south bund, it's in this old industrial building with killer views and barely any tourists last time i was there. if u want food, go to tianzifang but skip the main alleys and wander into the side lanes, you'll find a tiny dumpling place that's like 15 yuan for 10 pieces

if you're around on a weekend morning, hit up the antique market on dongtai road before it fully gentrifies. it's mostly gone now tbh but there's still a few stalls tucked near the intersection with liuhe road, you'll find old propaganda posters and weird mao-era knickknacks for like 20 kuai. also the shanghai natural history museum in jing'an is underrated, the building itself is this wild spiral shape and the dinosaur skeletons are legit impressive, plus it's like 30 yuan entry. for a quiet evening walk i'd do the suzhou creek path near the north bund but go west from the waibaidu bridge, past the old post office building, there's a stretch where the lights hit the water just right and nobody's around

yeah if you want something totally different check out the long museum (long museum west bund) it's this massive space with rotating contemporary art, way less crowded than the power station of art. also walk the suzhou creek trail near the north bund, it's kinda rough around the edges but you get these weird views of old factories mixed with new towers
