honestly just walk up to the roof of the public library on ren street, it's free and open til 8. the view over the old quarter with the red tile roofs is killer at golden hour. way less crowded than the lookout tower too, which always has a line. also if you're into street photography the laundry lines between buildings on yu lane make for some nice candid shots, especially when the wind picks up

the botanical garden on the east side has this greenhouse with a massive banyan tree, perfect for a silhouette shot around noon when the light filters through the leaves. entry is 15 yuan and it's usually dead quiet on weekdays. also, if you're into architecture, the abandoned textile factory on wu street has these broken windows with vines creeping in, great for a gritty urban look but watch your step, the floor's uneven in spots

if you're up early, the mist over the xindi river near the old bridge is pretty unreal around sunrise. the light hits the temple spires just right from there, maybe another hour in. for something quieter, the alley behind the central market has this faded mural of a dragon that most tourists walk right past, good for a moody shot around 4pm when the shadows get long.
