That rice cake soup you mentioned is at its best around 7 AM from the cart outside the old textile factory gate, where they add shredded pork and pickled mustard greens for 8 RMB a bowl. It's a different experience from the tourist-ready versions, and the line of locals tells you it's the real thing.

fwiw the guide's seafood picks are solid but they missed the crab noodle soup at this tiny spot near the old bus station. it's called something like lao cheng xiang mian guan on renmin east road, no english sign, just a faded yellow awning. they do a bowl with whole crab and thick hand-pulled noodles for 28 rmb and the broth is ridiculously rich from the crab roe. get there before 11 am or they sell out, it's mostly older locals eating there

the rice cake soup from the cart near workers' road that another comment mentioned is legit but i actually prefer the version from the stall inside the morning market on qingnian road. they add a handful of dried shrimp and a drizzle of lard that makes it way more savory, still 8 rmb a bowl. just look for the cart with the biggest line of aunties with metal thermoses

the guide nailed the big stuff but missed the late-night snack scene near the university. after 10 pm, the food carts cluster at the west gate of taizhou university on xueyuan road, and it's a whole different vibe. there's a guy who does fried stinky tofu with a spicy garlic sauce for 6 rmb a box, and it's way better than the touristy versions. also, the grilled whole squid there is cheaper than jiefang road at 10 rmb a skewer, but you gotta get there before 11 pm or he runs out.

Solid breakdown of the districts, saving this for my next trip up there. Something the guide skipped tho: if you're staying in Jiaojiang and relying on buses, the last routes thin out around 9pm, so a hotel near Shifu Ave sounds central but you'll be stuck paying 20 or 30 RMB for taxis after dinner. I usually pick a place within walking distance of the old pedestrian street instead, way easier at night.

The guide covers the districts well, but there's a timing quirk worth knowing about. I stayed in Jiaojiang during the May Day holiday a couple years back and paid nearly double the normal rate for a mid-range place on Shifu Avenue. The trick locals use is to book the night before and the night after the holiday window, since prices drop sharply on those shoulder days. If your dates are flexible around any major holiday, shifting by just one day can save you 200 to 300 RMB.

On the accommodation side, I'd push back slightly on Linhai being the best coastal pick. The actual coastline there is mostly industrial, and the "sea views" some hotels advertise are often just glimpses over the harbor. The real draw in Linhai is the ancient wall and Ziyang Street, so if you book there, do it for the history, not the beach. For genuine coastal atmosphere, head further to Sanmen Bay or over to the islands off Wenling, which isn't in this guide but is only about an hour by car and has some excellent seafood guesthouses.

One last thing on payment. The guide mentions paying in RMB for better rates, which is true, but many smaller Taizhou hotels now prefer WeChat Pay or Alipay over cash, and some won't accept foreign cards at all. Set up one of those apps before you arrive if you can.

One thing this guide doesn't mention is that hotel prices in Taizhou vary a lot depending on whether you're near a high-speed rail station. If you're arriving by train into Taizhou Station in Jiaojiang, the cluster of hotels along Shifu Avenue is convenient but you'll pay a premium. Walk 15 minutes south toward Jiefang South Road and the same quality room can be 30-40 RMB cheaper.

For Huangyan specifically, the area around Huangyan Cave gets very quiet on weekday evenings. Most restaurants close by 8pm. If you want dinner options past that, stay closer to the old town center instead.

Also worth knowing: many smaller hotels in Sanmen and Luqiao don't list on international platforms at all. Calling directly in Mandarin gets you a better rate than anything on Meituan, sometimes 20 percent lower. I've had good luck with that approach.
