i've done this exact route a few times and the guide is spot on but i'd add that the guanyin lake area has a small temple fair on the first sunday of each month that's not in most itineraries. it's near the south pavilion, vendors set up with local snacks and handmade goods, nothing fancy but the vibe is really chill and you can pick up some preserved mustard greens for like 10 yuan a bag.
the river cruise is nice but if you want something quieter, rent a private pedal boat from the same dock for 30 yuan an hour. you can go further up the fujiang where it's less crowded, past the new bridge there's a stretch with old willow trees and fewer motor boats. just bring cash, the rental guy doesn't take wechat sometimes.
for the shehong trip, the bus station has a small noodle stand outside that does a good dan dan mian for 8 yuan, better than anything inside the scenic area. grab one before you head up the mountain, the food up there is overpriced and bland.
solid plan overall, especially the day 2 shehong trip. one thing the guide doesnt mention is that the bus to shehong actually leaves from the north station, not the main one on jiefang road. the main station is mostly for long distance routes. the north station is a 15 minute walk from the city center, just past the old market area.
for the lingquan temple, if you go early like 8am theres a small breakfast stall just outside the main gate that does a killer savory rice roll with pickled veggies. 4 yuan and way better than the stuff inside the temple grounds. the temple itself is nice but the real draw is the garden behind the main hall, most tourists miss it cause theres no sign.
the commercial street near the train station is fine for souvenirs but the prices are marked up for tourists. if you walk two blocks east to the side alley behind the post office, theres a family run shop that sells the same bamboo crafts for half the price. they close at 6pm though so go earlier in the day.
the shehong day trip is solid but if you're up for a hike, skip the main temple area and take the back trail up to the peak. it's a bit steep but there's a small pavilion at the top with views over the whole county. takes about an hour each way and you'll barely see anyone else up there.
for the suining museum, i'd actually go just for the temporary exhibits. they rotate every few months and sometimes get stuff from the chengdu museum that's worth seeing. the permanent collection is pretty basic though.
one thing i'd add is the night market on binjiang road, it's a 15 minute walk from the food street. more snacks than sit-down stuff but they have grilled skewers and that spicy cold noodles that are better than the tofu pudding imo. opens around 8pm and goes till 1am most nights.

Suining's public buses cost 2 RMB per ride and cover most attractions, but taxis are cheap (starting at 7 RMB) for short trips. Ride-hailing apps like Didi work well here. For a scenic route, rent a bike from one of the city's docking stations for 1 RMB per hour.

As dusk falls, head to the Guan Yin Lake promenade near the city center. The walkway is lit with lanterns, and you'll see locals dancing or practicing tai chi. that old tea house on hongqi road is exactly right, i spent a whole afternoon there once just watching the regulars argue over moves, the owner eventually brought me a free refill and a plate of sunflower seeds. also if you're doing the riverside walk at night, keep going past the main promenade toward the second bridge, there's a guy who sets up a makeshift stall selling grilled corn and sweet potatoes for like 5 rmb each, best snack along the whole stretch
the lotus island ferry is nice but honestly i prefer going at sunset, the light hits the temple just right and there's way fewer people after 5pm. also if you're into the river snails, skip the main food alley stalls and go to the little spot on jiefang road near the old cinema, they've been doing them for like 30 years and the sauce is way better. one thing the guide doesn't mention is the suining bamboo weaving workshop on renmin street, it's a tiny place run by an old couple and you can watch them make these intricate baskets for like 20 rmb, really cool to see
yeah the bamboo weaving workshop is a gem, totally agree. but if you're already on renmin street, walk two blocks south to the old tea house at the corner of hongqi road. it's this crumbling building with mismatched chairs and the owner's been brewing the same blend since the 90s. 8 rmb for a pot and you can sit there for hours watching old guys play chinese chess. way more authentic than the touristy spots
