good list, one thing i'd add is the scallion pancake place on the corner of Tiedong and Renmin, no sign just a lady with a griddle from 4 to 7pm. 5 RMB each and she's been doing it for years, crispy and flaky with a bit of chili paste if you ask
also for a nicer sit-down meal than the guide mentions, try Dongbei Home Cooking on Yingbin Avenue near the tea house, their sweet and sour pork is 45 RMB and they do a killer eggplant dish too. quieter than the food street spots and the old couple running it are really welcoming, just point at what you want on the menu board
the guide's solid but i gotta shout out the breakfast scene around Tiedong Street, there's this tiny place called Jianbing Xiaochi that does jianbing for 6 RMB with extra egg for 2 more. it's just a cart outside a convenience store but they're there from 7 to 10am and the line moves fast, that crispy crepe with the sauce is the best way to start a day exploring
also if you're into spicy food the mapo tofu at Chuanweiguan on Yingbin Avenue is killer for 25 RMB a plate, it's a hole in the wall with maybe four tables but the owner's been making it since the 90s. i'd take that over the braised ribs any day for a quick dinner
honestly that's a solid guide, especially the night market tip. I'd add that the braised pork ribs at Nongjia are legit but if you go on a weekend you gotta get there before 6 or you'll wait an hour. Also the egg tarts at Siping Cake Shop are good but I think the ones from the little bakery on Tiedong Er Road near the night market are better and only 6 RMB each, they sell out fast though so grab em early
one thing the guide missed is the cold noodle spot at 12 Renmin Road, it's called Liangpi Wang and their spicy cold noodles with cucumber are like 12 RMB a bowl. perfect for summer afternoons when you dont want a heavy meal. they close at 8pm so not a late night option
for drinks i'd skip coco and walk two blocks east to the smaller boba place called Sweet Tea House, their taro milk tea is 10 RMB and uses real taro not powder. way better value imo
Siping neighborhoods: where should I stay?
if you're looking for something quieter and more local, try the area around Siping Normal University. the streets there have a chill vibe with cheap cafes and bookshops, and the rent's prob half what you'd pay near the station. downside is it's a 20 min bus ride to the main sights, but the 17 bus runs every 10 mins so it's not bad. just avoid the dorms on South Hero Street if you need sleep, those walls are paper thin
honestly depends what you're after but for a first timer id stick near the train station area on Tiedong street. it's got the most buses and taxis running through so you can actually get around without waiting forever. the central square area around Renmin Road is fine too but gets dead after 9pm when the shops close.
if you're into food the little alleys off Yingxiong Street have way better street eats than the touristy spots near the station. cheaper too, like 8-10 yuan for a proper bowl of noodles compared to 15 near the station. just watch out for the scooters on the sidewalks, they dont slow down for anyone
