if you're up for a short walk outside the main temple area, check out the yan temple. it's dedicated to confucius' favorite student and barely gets any visitors, so you can sit in the courtyard and hear yourself think. way more chill than the big spots
honestly just wander down the side streets near the drum tower, there's a tiny family-run place that does these amazing fried tofu skewers, no sign in english, just follow the smell of chili oil
the little street market near the north gate is great for breakfast, grab some of the local sesame cakes fresh off the griddle, nobody talks about that in any guide i've seen
