yeah the others got the river and the food down. my rec is different, go find the old railway workers' housing blocks southwest of the train station, off Wenhua Road. they're these crumbling 60s brick rows, still lived in, and there's a courtyard in the middle where an old guy sells sesame pancakes from a coal oven every morning around 7. no sign, just a wooden board. locals bring their own eggs and he fries em in. not touristy at all, just real neighborhood life. also if u walk past the blocks to the dead end, there's a tiny temple to the river god tucked between two apartment buildings, barely bigger than a shed. nobody goes there except a few grandmas who light incense on the 1st and 15th. quiet, kinda eerie, but gives u a sense of the old Luohe that's disappearing.

for a chill afternoon, skip the main parks and head to the small green strip behind the city library. there's a bench under a big locust tree where old men play xiangqi all afternoon. u can just sit and watch, no one bothers u, and sometimes they'll offer u tea from their thermos if u look interested. that's the real hidden gem, the pace of life, not any specific spot.

honestly the bike thing is cool but if u wanna skip crowds entirely, head to the old canal district near the north gate after 9pm. theres this tiny wonton shop tucked behind a laundry place, no sign, just a red lantern. they only do beef wontons and they run out by 10. also theres a stretch of wall near the east market with graffiti from the 80s, locals walk past it but nobody stops. good for photos if u like faded stuff.

honestly this is a solid plan, i've done pretty much this exact route before. one thing the guide doesn't mention is that the shuanghui industrial park tour can fill up fast on weekends, so if you're going saturday or sunday book at least two days ahead. also the paddleboats at shahe park are fine but the real move is renting a bike and following the river path west for about 15 minutes - there's a quieter spot with fewer people and better views around the old bridge.

for day 2 i'd swap the confucian temple for the liangyi village ruins if you're into history at all. it's a bit further out (taxi from xu shen park about 15 yuan) but the excavated site is way more interesting than the temple tbh. the temple is just a small courtyard with a few steles, you can see it in 20 minutes.

the tea market tip is good but go early, like right at 8, because the good vendors sell out of the fresh stuff by noon. old lady at stall 37 near the back entrance has the best xinyang mao jian for like 40 yuan per 100g, way better than the tourist prices up front.

solid plan for sure, just a couple things i'd add. for day 1, skip old wang's noodles on renmin road and walk two blocks east to the little place on jiefang street with the red sign - their braised noodles are better and cheaper, like 8 yuan a bowl, plus they do a spicy tofu that actually has some heat. the museum is decent but don't spend more than an hour there, the real highlight is the shuanghui tour if you can get in.

day 3 i'd actually skip the food museum and go to the morning market on jianshe road instead, right next to the tea market. it's open from 6 to 10 and you can get fresh youtiao and soy milk for like 3 yuan total, way better than the museum which is basically just a big ad for their sausages. the tea market tip about going early is spot on, i've missed out before and regretted it

yeah the guide's day 2 plan is fine but honestly i'd rearrange it a bit. the confucian temple is tiny like the other person said, you can do it in 15 minutes then walk to the old city wall ruins behind the hospital on wenming road. it's not marked well but locals go there to fly kites, there's a section of original han dynasty wall visible behind the apartment buildings. free and way more atmospheric.

for day 1 the night market on yingbin road is good but if you go on a tuesday or thursday the crowd thins out a lot and some stalls close early. i'd hit it on a friday or saturday when it's full chaos, that's when the best grilled skewer guy shows up near the east entrance. he does lamb heart and kidney which you won't find other nights.

souvenir shopping tip - the handicraft street closes at 7 but the paper cutting lady in shop 8 might stay later if she's working. i've bought from her at 7:30 before, just knock if the lights on.
