the tulou tip is solid but if you go on a weekday morning you'll basically have chengqi lou to yourself for an hour before the tour buses show up around 10am. also the night market on zhongshan is good but the real move is the little family-run places on jiefang road near the old city gate where you can get the salt-baked chicken for like 25 rmb and it's way better than the touristy spots
ngl the liancheng tip in the guide is underrated, i took the cable car up guanhua mountain last november and the danxia formations look completely different from the top than they do on the ground. there's a little temple halfway up the hiking trail that most people miss because they take the cable car straight to the summit, the monk there sometimes offers free tea if you chat with him. the round trip cable car is 80 rmb like the guide says but the walk down is only about 40 minutes and you get way better photos of the rock faces
imo the guanzhai mountain hike is worth doing early like 7am before it gets hot, the mist over the cliffs in the morning is something else. i did it last spring and saw some wild monkeys near the waterfall trail, just keep your snacks zipped up or they'll swipe em. the glass bridge is fine but the real payoff is the view from the top pavilion where you can see all the way to the city on a clear day

a tip for the quiet suburban area near dongxiao forest park, if you go in spring the cherry blossom path along the creek is actually better than the main trail. most people turn left at the entrance but if you go right past the little pavilion there is a smaller loop with maybe 10 trees in full bloom and hardly anyone around. the guesthouse owners usually know about it but forget to mention it to guests
honestly the budget hostel on zhongshan road is fine for a night but the noise from the street market sets up around 5 AM so bring earplugs. if you walk two minutes north to the alley behind the KFC there is a family-run guesthouse called Old Lin's that does private rooms for 80 yuan. no website, just knock on the door with the green bamboo outside
the xinluo creative park area is actually pretty dead on weekends btw. during the week the coworking spaces are full but saturday and sunday most cafes close by 6 PM. better to work from the library near renmin square if you need a quiet spot on a sunday, they have free wifi and a tea room upstairs
one thing nobody mentioned is the longyan night market on shifang street every tuesday and friday. starts around 7 PM and has the best grilled tofu i've had anywhere in fujian. the old guy at the third stall from the north entrance uses a family recipe his grandmother passed down, costs 4 yuan a skewer
I've stayed at the Green Valley Inn near Liancheng Mountain a few times and it's a solid choice if you want quiet. The rooms are basic but clean, and the owner will point you to a trailhead most tourists miss, the one behind the temple about 200 meters up the road.
For the nightlife area, I'd actually skip the bars right on Wanda Plaza and walk two blocks east to the side streets. There is a place called Lao Wang's that does grilled fish until 2 AM, and it draws more locals than students. The prices are about 30% cheaper than the plaza spots.
One thing the guide didn't mention is that the metro line 1 gets crowded during rush hour, 7:30 to 9 AM and 5 to 7 PM. If you are staying near the train station and need to go downtown during those times, the bus 2 is slower but you will actually get a seat.
The Pullman is nice for a splurge, but I think the breakfast buffet is overpriced at 128 CNY per person. You are better off walking to the noodle shop on Longyan Avenue, the one with the red sign, they do a good beef soup for 18 CNY.
