for the ancient city wall, if you walk past the main section near the east gate and follow the path along the river for about 15 minutes you'll reach a broken down watchtower that's completely overgrown. theres no sign or anything but you can climb up through a gap in the wall. the view from there at sunset is insane, you can see the whole bend of the lei river and all the old rooftops. just bring mosquito spray, i got eaten alive up there
also for the padelboats at luyang lake, they close the rentals at 5pm sharp even if the park stays open. found that out the hard way when i showed up at 4:45 and the guy was already packing up. if you want a boat go before 3pm when its cooler anyway and the lotus flowers are fully open, the afternoon heat makes it kinda miserable
the guide mentions the opera but skips the fact that the grand theatre has a small museum upstairs with old huagu costumes and masks. its free if you show your opera ticket, just ask at the box office. most people walk right past the staircase
honestly the Lei River cruise is way better if you go on a weekday evening, theres barely anyone else and you can hear the water lapping against the boat. The light show is nice but the real magic is around 6:30 when the sun hits the old city wall from across the river, makes for some great photos without the crowd
also if you're hiking Mount Leiyang, skip the main trail and take the left fork about 200 meters in. It's steeper but leads to a little abandoned temple with a surprisingly well-kept garden. No one ever goes there, feels like you discovered something secret. Just watch out for the loose stones near the top, I almost ate shit on those last month
for shopping, Wuyi Market is fine but theres a smaller alley market off Renmin Road between the theatre and the river that opens sunday mornings only. They sell actual antiques and old papermaking tools from the 80s, not the tourist crap. I got a full set of bamboo paper molds for like 80 yuan, guy even threw in a free brush
yeah the guide's got the basics but one thing i'd add is the old tea house on Cai Lun Road, like a block south of the memorial. its this crumbling two-story building with wooden balconies, they serve this local green tea for like 5 yuan and the owner's been there since the 80s. sit upstairs by the window and you can watch the street market below, feels like stepping back in time

For the Cai Lun Park family area, the dumpling place mentioned is legit but there's also a small hotpot joint called Laoma on the north side of the park that does a set meal for two at 88 yuan. Their broth is milky white and they give you free ice cream cones after, kids love it. Just get there before 6pm or you'll queue for an hour.
yeah the guide's pretty thorough. one thing i'd throw in is the food street just off Jiefang Road near the old theater district. it's not marked on maps but it's between the two big department stores. they do this killer spicy duck blood vermicelli from like 5pm til midnight, dirt cheap too, like 8 yuan a bowl. way better than the touristy stuff around Wuyi Square and the vendors are super friendly if you're obviously not from there
The guide's recommendation for the southern district near the forest park is spot on if you want quiet, but I'd add that the GreenTree Inn there is actually closer to the west gate entrance than the main park gate. From the west gate you can walk straight to the bamboo grove trails in about ten minutes, which most tourists miss because they stick to the main path. That area also has a night market on weekends with grilled fish skewers that beat anything you'll find near Wuyi Square.
For the budget options, the Leiyang Youth Hostel has gotten a bit run down since 2023, so I'd steer backpackers toward the guesthouses on Yingbin Avenue instead. The one at number 78 has a nice old couple running it who will make you tea and point you to the best stinky tofu spot around the corner on Tiyu Road. Just don't expect English to be spoken anywhere there.
