yeah the guide nailed auntie li's spot on renmin road, that's the real deal for breakfast. but if you're around at dinner time, try the small family-run place on beizheng street near the old temple, no english sign but they do an incredible dry pot with local mushrooms and bamboo shoots, runs about 35 yuan per person. also worth grabbing a bag of fried dough sticks from the lady who sets up outside the confucian temple around 7am, they're still warm and only 1 yuan each
the guide's right about the night market on renmin road but honestly the best time to hit it is around 9pm when the second wave of vendors show up. there's this older guy near the south end who does grilled stinky tofu with a pickled radish topping that's way better than the fried version, only 4 yuan a skewer. also if you're at xiangwei restaurant, skip the braised pork and ask for the stir-fried river snails with purple perilla, it's not on the english menu but it's their best dish at like 25 yuan
i'd actually add that the rice noodle shop on wuyi road mentioned in the guide is great but they run out of toppings by 2pm most days, so go early if you want the braised beef option. for a late night snack, there's a guy on a bicycle with a cart near the leiyang railway station exit around 10pm selling stinky tofu with a chili vinegar sauce, 3 yuan for a small bag, it's a hidden gem the guide missed
leiyang neighborhoods for a 2-month stay?
If you want something a bit more low-key but still central, try the area around Cai Lun Memorial Park. It's a short walk to the main commercial streets but feels less hectic, and there are a few solid breakfast spots serving yuanzi and rice noodles in the morning. Rent tends to be a little cheaper there too, closer to 1200-1500.
honestly if you want walkability and street food just stick near the southern part of the city center around the Wuyi Square area. lots of small lanes with vendors selling chive pancakes and stinky tofu until pretty late at night. rent should be reasonable for a longer stay too, prob around 1500-2000 a month for a small place. just avoid the new development zone north of the train station, it's all concrete and chain restaurants
Yeah Wuyi Square is solid, but I'd also check out the area around the old Xiangjiang riverfront, closer to the bridge. It's a little quieter but still has good food stalls and a market nearby, plus you're right by the river for walks.
