πŸ—ΊοΈ Arrival and Orientation
Jinghong Gasa International Airport (JHG) is 5 km south of downtown; a taxi to the city center costs about 30 RMB and takes 15 minutes. Most travelers stay in the Gaozhuang Night Market area or near Manting Park, where guesthouses range from 150 to 400 RMB per night. Pick up a local SIM card at the airport or a China Mobile shop on Xuanwei Avenue for around 100 RMB. Start your trip with a stroll along the Lancang River promenade to get your bearings.

πŸŒ… Day 1 Morning: Manting Park
Begin at Manting Park (open 8:00-17:00, entry 40 RMB), the oldest Buddhist temple in Xishuangbanna, located on Manting Road. Spend two hours exploring the golden pagoda, the reclining Buddha, and the tropical gardens. From there, walk 10 minutes north to the Xishuangbanna Nationality Museum (free entry, closed Mondays) to learn about the Dai, Hani, and other ethnic groups. Grab a bowl of rice noodles at a nearby street stall for about 10 RMB.

🍜 Day 1 Afternoon: Gaozhuang Market
Head to Gaozhuang Night Market (open from 18:00, but stalls start setting up around 16:00) on the south bank of the Lancang River. Even in the afternoon, you can browse the adjacent handicraft shops and taste Dai-style grilled fish with lemongrass for 30-50 RMB. The market is a 10-minute walk from Manting Park, or a 5-minute taxi ride (about 10 RMB). This is the best spot to buy traditional Dai textiles and silver jewelry.

πŸŒ™ Day 1 Evening: Night Market
Return to Gaozhuang Night Market after dark, when hundreds of stalls sell everything from tropical fruit shakes (15 RMB) to bamboo rice (10 RMB). The market stays lively until midnight, and you can enjoy live Dai music at several open-air bars along the river. For a quieter evening, walk 15 minutes to the Mekong River Cafe on the north bank for a cold Beerlao (20 RMB) with a view of the illuminated bridge.

🚌 Day 2 Morning: Wild Elephant Valley
Take a 30-minute bus from Jinghong Bus Station (departs every 20 minutes from 7:00 to 17:00, fare 15 RMB) to Wild Elephant Valley (entry 65 RMB, open 8:00-18:00). The best time to see elephants is early morning, so aim to arrive by 9:00. Walk the 4 km elevated rainforest trail and visit the elephant breeding center. Bring insect repellent and wear sturdy shoes; the trail can be muddy after rain.

🌿 Day 2 Afternoon: Tropical Garden
After returning to Jinghong by bus (last bus at 18:00), head to the Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (entry 80 RMB, open 8:00-18:00) in Menglun, about 1 hour by taxi (150 RMB) or bus from Jinghong. The garden is huge, so rent a bike (20 RMB per hour) or take the shuttle (50 RMB) to see the giant water lilies and palm collections. If you are short on time, the smaller Jinghong Tropical Flower Garden (entry 30 RMB) near the city is a good alternative.

🍒 Day 2 Evening: Dai Dinner
For dinner, try a traditional Dai meal at Mei Mei Dai Restaurant on Manting Road, where a set menu for two costs around 120 RMB and includes pineapple rice, grilled chicken, and sour bamboo soup. The restaurant is open from 17:00 to 22:00, and reservations are recommended in high season. After dinner, walk 10 minutes to the Lancang River night cruise (departs at 20:30, 100 RMB per person) for a 1-hour ride with views of the city lights.

🏞️ Day 3 Morning: Ethnic Villages
Take a 20-minute taxi (30 RMB) to Dai Garden (entry 50 RMB, open 8:00-18:00), a cluster of five traditional Dai villages where you can see stilt houses, weaving demonstrations, and participate in a Dai water-splashing ceremony (small fee). The site is 10 km east of Jinghong, and buses from the main bus station also run there for 5 RMB. Allow 2-3 hours to explore the villages and sample fresh coconut and tropical fruit.

πŸ›οΈ Day 3 Afternoon: Local Markets
Return to Jinghong and visit the Jinghong Market (open 6:00-18:00) on Minhang Road, where locals sell everything from dried herbs to fresh durian. This is a great place to buy souvenirs like Pu'er tea (50-200 RMB per cake) and Dai-style spices. For a more modern shopping experience, head to the Wanda Plaza on Xuanwei Avenue, which has a supermarket and food court. A taxi between the two takes about 10 minutes and costs 15 RMB.

✈️ Day 3 Evening: Departure
If you have a late flight, spend your final hours at the Lancang River promenade, watching the sunset over the water. The airport is a 15-minute taxi ride from the city center (30 RMB), and check-in closes 45 minutes before departure for domestic flights. For a last meal, try the airport's noodle shop, or grab a quick bite at the Gaozhuang Night Market before heading out. Allow extra time during peak season, as traffic can be heavy around 18:00.

Solid write-up. One thing I'd flag about Day 2: pairing Wild Elephant Valley and the Tropical Botanical Garden in Menglun on the same day is rough. The garden alone is 900 hectares, I spent a full afternoon there and barely covered the west half. If you only have three days, I'd pick one or the other, not both.

On the elephant front, actual wild sightings at Wild Elephant Valley are rare now. The elephants you'll see are mostly in the breeding center. Still worth it for the rainforest canopy walk, just set expectations.

Also, Gaozhuang stalls start winding down closer to 23:00 than midnight, especially outside peak season. If you want the full chaos, get there by 20:00.

nice writeup, covers way more than most jinghong posts do. one thing i'd add for day 1 evening, the river cruise is fine but the night market food is the real event and the guide undersells it. the dai grilled tilapia stuffed with lemongrass and kaffir lime, wrapped in banana leaf, is like 35 rmb and honestly better than the sit down restaurants. look for the stalls with the older women doing the wrapping by hand, not the ones with laminated photo menus out front.

also on day 2, if u take the local bus to wild elephant valley instead of the tourist shuttle, it drops u at the highway junction and you walk about 15 min to the gate. saved me the 15 rmb fare but cost me a sweaty walk, so depends on your vibe.

for the puer tea, second what others said about avoiding the market markup, but also know that most "ancient tree" cakes under 100 rmb are blended. if a vendor swears it's gushu for 50 rmb theyre lying. fine tea anyway, just dont pay gushu prices for it

Good breakdown, though the Gaozhuang area has shifted a bit. If you're booking for 2026, a lot of the guesthouses on the river side have crept up past 400 RMB in high season, especially around Chinese New Year and the Water Splashing Festival in April. I'd book two or three weeks out.

One thing the itinerary skips is the Dai medicine. There's a small courtyard off Manting Road, near the south gate of the park, where an older woman sells herbal balms and dried roots. She doesn't speak much Mandarin, but a Dai friend took me and it was one of the better afternoons I had in Jinghong. Worth twenty minutes if you're already at the park.

Also, the 30 RMB taxi from the airport is right, but the drivers at the rank will often quote 60 first. Just walk to the official stand or use Didi.

🌿 Explore Tropical Gardens
The Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden in Menglun is a must-visit, about 60 kilometers from Jinghong. It's open daily from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and the entrance fee is around 80 yuan. You can easily spend a full day wandering through its diverse plant collections and rainforest trails.

🐘 Meet the Elephants
The Wild Elephant Valley, located about 45 kilometers north of Jinghong, offers a chance to see Asian elephants in a semi-wild environment. The park is open from 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM, and tickets cost approximately 65 yuan. Don't miss the elephant show and the forest walkway where you might spot wild elephants if you're lucky.

πŸ›• Visit Dai Temples
Wat Chaimongkol, also known as the Bamboo Temple, is a serene Theravada Buddhist temple in the city center. It's free to enter and open from early morning until dusk. Another highlight is the Manle Temple, which offers a peaceful retreat and a glimpse into the local Dai culture.

πŸ›οΈ Shop at Local Markets
The Jinghong Night Market on Manting Road comes alive after 6:00 PM with stalls selling handicrafts, clothing, and street food. For fresh produce and exotic fruits, head to the Xishuangbanna Market in the morning. Remember to bargain politely for the best prices.

🍜 Taste Dai Cuisine
Dai food is known for its bold flavors, using herbs like lemongrass, cilantro, and mint. Try the pineapple rice, grilled tilapia, and bamboo-cooked sticky rice at local restaurants like Mei Mei Dai Restaurant on Menglong Road. For a unique experience, visit a Dai family home for a traditional meal.

🚣 Cruise the Mekong
The Mekong River, known locally as the Lancang River, offers scenic boat trips from Jinghong's waterfront. A short cruise to the border with Myanmar takes about two hours and costs around 200 yuan. Evening cruises with dinner and dance performances are also popular.

πŸŽ‰ Join Water Splashing Festival
If you're in Jinghong in mid-April, don't miss the Water Splashing Festival, the biggest celebration for the Dai people. The festival lasts three days and involves splashing water to wash away bad luck. Expect parades, dragon boat races, and lots of joyful water fights.

🌳 Hike in the Rainforest
The Xishuangbanna Primeval Forest Park, about 8 kilometers east of Jinghong, has well-marked trails through dense rainforest. The park is open from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and tickets are 65 yuan. Keep an eye out for rare birds and monkeys along the way.

Solid rundown, the Mekong cruise detail is useful since most guides skip the pricing. One thing I'd flag: the boat trips to the Myanmar border are fine but if you've got an extra half day, take a songthaew out to Ganlanba instead. It's about 30 km southeast of Jinghong, the Dai villages there are less commercialized than what you get near the city, and the morning market at Menglun town before you hit the botanical garden is worth the early start. Also, for the Water Splashing Festival, book accommodation at least two months out if you're coming in April, everything in the city center fills up and prices triple.

Good list, covers the main stuff. One thing I'd add: the botanical garden in Menglun is way better if you stay overnight in the town instead of day tripping from Jinghong. The garden has a hotel inside it and you can walk the trails at dawn before the tour buses show up, totally different vibe. Also the night market on Manting Road is great but honestly the smaller market near the Dai hospital has better and cheaper Dai food, less touristy.

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

most people sleep on the Dai cooking classes, there are a couple in the villages around Menghan where you go to the market first then cook in someone's kitchen, half day thing for like 150 yuan & its the best souvenir honestly since you can actually recreate the nam prik when u get home

also the botanical garden entry is 80 but the shuttle inside is another 40 each way & the garden is huge, walking the whole thing in one day in april heat is brutal, rent a bike at the entrance instead its cheaper & faster

one correction on timing, the primeval forest park closes earlier than 6 in practice, last entry is more like 4:30 so dont roll up at 5 expecting to get in
