Anyone else notice the grilled squid at the morning market is a totally different animal from the night market version? The morning stalls on Zhongshan Road grill it over charcoal and it comes out smoky and tender, way better than the rubbery skewers you get after dark. Also the guide lists the market as running till 2pm but most of the seafood stalls pack up by noon, so dont treat that as a hard close. And for the rice noodle soup, the tiny spot tucked behind the temple does a fish ball version for 12 rmb that beats the 15 rmb ones on the main drag.

been twice now and the guide nails the highlights. one angle nobody's touched: the sit-down places are great but if you're solo the portions at Jiaojiang Seafood Restaurant are sized for two, so you end up paying 150 for a meal meant for a couple. i just did the market stalls and the food court instead and ate better for a third of the price.

fwiw the claypot rice at the temple snack street is slept on too, i had a version there for 20 rmb that beat the food court one. and yeah second the cash thing, i watched a guy try to pay with a card at Sister Li's and just walk away hungry

nice writeup, appreciate the effort. one thing nobody flagged: bus route 12 stops running earlier than the others on weekends, i waited like 40 min on a saturday night near binjiang and ended up just walking. also if ur doing the seafood at jiaojiang seafood restaurant, ask what came in that morning instead of ordering off the menu, theyll steer u to whatever's actually fresh & it's usually cheaper than the printed price

been to jiaojiangcun twice and the food section is missing the one thing i'd actually plan a day around, the morning noodle stalls behind the wet market on market street. they open around 5:30 and close by 9, hand pulled noodles with a pork broth, like 8 RMB. nothing on shipin jie comes close honestly.

also fwiw the west lake boat rental is per boat not per person, so if you're solo it's a bit steep but split it with anyone and it's cheap. and the lakeside path is closer to 3 km than 2.5 if you do the full loop past the pavilion.

one correction on getting around, taxis technically start at 8 but the meter often already reads 9 or 10 when u get in, seems like a flag drop thing. not a big deal just don't be surprised.

solid breakdown, saving this for when i finally get there. i visited once back in 2019 on a work trip and the thing that stuck with me most wasn't on your list at all, the little bridge over the canal behind Mingqing Street around dusk. locals were out there with folding chairs and thermoses just chatting, no vendors no tickets. felt more like the real town than the main drag.

one practical bit, i stayed near the bus station and the walk to old town was closer to 25 min than 20, so maybe pad that if you're on a tight morning schedule. also the RMB figures have probably crept up since i went, 15 for fish balls sounds cheap now.

Good writeup, the day by day layout makes it easy to follow. One thing I'd add is that the old town gate area gets a lot of morning tour buses, so if you want Mingqing Street to yourself for photos, go closer to 7:30 before the groups show up at 8:30.

Also on the museum, the free entry is right but the English signage is thin, so the audio guide (I think it was 10 RMB) is worth it if you actually want to follow the local history instead of just walking past displays.

For the market, bring small
