🏯 Explore Jiaji Old Town
Wander the cobblestone lanes of Jiaji Old Town, anchored by the 18th-century Dongyue Temple at 12 Old Street. The temple opens daily from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM, with a modest entry fee of 20 yuan. Insider tip: visit on weekday mornings to avoid tour groups and catch locals practicing tai chi in the courtyard.

🚣 Cruise the Jiaji River
The Jiaji River winds through the heart of town, and a 40-minute bamboo raft ride from the South Dock costs 60 yuan per person. Boats depart every 20 minutes between 9:00 AM and 6:00 PM. For a quieter experience, book the sunset cruise at 5:30 PM, when the water reflects the old town's lanterns.

🍜 Taste Local Street Food
Jiaji's night market on Fuxing Road comes alive at 6:00 PM, offering specialties like stinky tofu (10 yuan) and hand-pulled noodles (15 yuan). Don't miss the grilled river fish at Auntie Li's stall, a local favorite for over 20 years. Come hungry and bring small bills, as most vendors don't accept digital payments.

⛰️ Hike Dragon's Back Mountain
A 30-minute bus ride from Jiaji Bus Station (line 7) takes you to the Dragon's Back Mountain trailhead. The 5-kilometer loop rewards hikers with panoramic views of the river valley and takes about 2.5 hours at a leisurely pace. Start before 9:00 AM to avoid the midday heat and bring at least one liter of water.

🎭 Catch a Shadow Puppet Show
The Jiaji Cultural Center at 45 Renmin Road hosts traditional shadow puppet performances every Friday and Saturday at 7:30 PM. Tickets are 40 yuan and can be bought at the door, but arrive 20 minutes early for front-row seats. The shows are in local dialect, but the visual storytelling transcends language.

πŸ›οΈ Shop for Local Crafts
The artisan quarter along West Street specializes in hand-woven bamboo baskets and embroidered textiles. Prices range from 30 yuan for small souvenirs to 300 yuan for larger pieces, and haggling is expected but keep it friendly. Most shops open at 10:00 AM and close around 8:00 PM, with a few closing for lunch between 1:00 and 2:00 PM.

β˜• Relax at Riverside Cafes
The riverside strip near the North Gate is lined with cozy cafes like Riverbend Coffee (open 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM), where a latte costs around 25 yuan. Grab a window seat for people-watching and free Wi-Fi. In the evening, some cafes host live acoustic music, starting around 8:00 PM.

🚌 Getting Around Jiaji
Jiaji is compact and walkable, but local buses (1 yuan per ride) connect the old town with the train station and outlying attractions. Taxis start at 8 yuan and are plentiful, though drivers rarely speak English. For a scenic alternative, rent a bicycle from Jiaji Bike Rental on Zhongshan Road for 20 yuan per day.

the west street craft shops are worth a mention for one specific thing the guide skips: several of the basket weavers take custom orders and can finish a small piece in a day or two if you're staying that long. i had a tea basket made for 45 yuan and picked it up the next afternoon, way better than anything mass produced. just ask, most of them won't offer it unless you do

also the cafe wifi situation is spotty after 8pm when the acoustic sets start, so if you actually need to get work done go earlier in the day

Two things I'd add. The bamboo raft price has gone up to 80 yuan this season, and they've started running a 7 AM departure that's worth the early alarm since the mist sits low on the water and you'll have the river mostly to yourself. Also, the Dongyue Temple closes for a two-hour lunch break around noon, which the posted hours don't mention, so don't plan a midday visit there.

On the mountain, the bus schedule is the real constraint people underestimate. Line 7 from Jiaji Bus Station only runs every 45 minutes or so, and the last one back down leaves the trailhead around 5:30 PM. Miss it and you're looking at a long walk or a pricey taxi. I'd check the return times before you start the loop rather than after.

solid guide, covers the main stuff well. one thing i'd flag is the taxi situation after dark. drivers around the old town will quote you a flat 20 or 30 yuan instead of using the meter once it gets late, especially near the night market. just insist on the meter or walk a block off Fuxing Road where it's easier to flag one that'll run it properly.

also on the river, if you're there in spring the water level can rise fast after rain and they'll sometimes suspend the raft rides for a day or two. worth checking at the South Dock before you build your morning around it.

good writeup, covers way more than most guides do. one thing i'd push back on is the Day 2 bike rental at West Lake. 20 yuan sounds cheap but the north entrance stand is the touristy one, if u walk another 5 min west along the lake path there's a smaller stand doing 12 yuan a day and the bikes are actually better maintained. learned that the hard way after a chain snapped on me near the Tea Pavilion.

also the guide says allow 3 hours for the lake loop which is honestly tight if you stop at the pavilion. the tea tasting is free but they rope you into a sit-down and it's easy to lose an hour there. locals go before 9am when the mist is still on the water and the tour groups haven't shown up yet. completely different lake at that hour.

for Lao Wang Noodles, skip the 15 yuan bowl and get the beef version for 22. the cheap one is mostly broth.

appreciate the effort on this, the bus numbers and prices are all accurate which is rare for a Jiaji writeup.

the gap i'd flag is Day 2 evening. the Grand Theater show is fine but if you're there on a Thursday the smaller venue on the second floor of the teahouse at 30 Culture Road does a folk music set at 8pm for 30 yuan, no booking needed. half the crowd is locals, way less produced than the big theater thing.

also on Day 3, the History Museum near Shopping Street is fine but honestly skippable if you already did the Jiaji Museum on Day 1, they overlap a lot on the same local history. better to spend that hour at the tea shop on the corner of Shopping and Wenhua, they do a proper sit-down tasting for 25 yuan and the owner actually explains the leaves instead of just pouring.

one small thing on the temple, the 10 yuan entry is cash only last i checked, no wechat pay at the gate.

arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down

This itinerary covers the main spots well, though I'd reshuffle Day 3 a bit. The Jade Buddha Temple meditation session fills up fast on weekends, so if you're going on a Saturday or Sunday, get there closer to 7:30 rather than 7:50. Also worth knowing: the Calligraphy Museum closes at 4:30 sharp, they actually start ushering people out around 4:15, so don't leave it too late.

One thing the guide misses is the small night food street behind Central Market on the alley off Jiefang Road. It only kicks off around 9 PM and it's where locals actually eat, not the market stalls themselves. Grilled oysters there run about 8 yuan each and they're better than anything at Star Night Market.

For the riverside promenade, the lit section is nice but the western end past the second bridge is quieter and has better views back toward the old town. Most tourists turn around too early.
