if you're up for a bit of a hike, xinyi is about an hour north by bus and has some legit mountain scenery, the dongjiang river area is pretty chill for a walk. honestly the bus rides there can be bumpy but worth it for the views. there's also a small temple up on xianren mountain if you feel like climbing, nothing too crazy just a nice lookout
maoming city is only about 40 minutes by bus and way bigger than huazhou for shopping and food options, the train station area has a decent night market. if you want something quieter, dianbai district is a bit further but has a long coastline with some seafood spots right on the water, i'd skip the touristy beach areas and just find a random stall near the port
the old town area in wuchuan is about an hour by bus and has some really well-preserved ming dynasty architecture, most tourists skip it so you'll have the streets mostly to yourself. there's a small museum there too that covers the local salt trade history, costs like 10 yuan to get in. the ferry from dianbai to the smaller islands can be a fun half-day thing too, just check the schedule because they don't run as often as you'd think
