The area around the Heyuan East railway station is actually a solid choice if you don't mind being a bit outside the old center. It's newer and cleaner, and you've got the Jiangdong New District with some decent riverside walking paths and a handful of good hot pot places along Binjiang Avenue. The bus to the reservoir runs from there every 20 minutes or so, which is easier than dealing with the traffic near the museum.

yuancheng district is your best bet, right near the xinfengjiang reservoir and the museum. tons of street food around the old city wall area, especially on hongxing road where they do that grilled fish thing. if you want quieter but still central, try the area near the heyuan railway station, it's a bit cheaper and you can walk to the wanda plaza in 15 mins

honestly i'd just look at the area around wanda plaza itself if you want convenience. the food court there is pretty decent and you're close to a few bus lines that get you to the lake stuff quick. not the most charming spot but it works
