the drum tower area is worth it if u catch it late afternoon, the shadows getting long across the square make for good minimal shots. also, if u walk down the alley behind the old guild hall, there's this crumbling brick wall with wild vines, nobody ever goes there. bring a wide lens tho, it's tight.
meh, i'd just wander around the old residential streets north of the bell tower. the peeling paint and laundry lines make for better texture than any landmark. also, the riverbank at dusk, not for the pagoda, but for the weird reflections on the water. bring a tripod if
honestly the old city wall near the south gate is slept on. most people hit the temple complex but that wall at sunset gives u that layered shadow vibe with the rooftops. also the morning market on zhongshan road, around 7am, if u want real street life shots, the vendors set up fast and the light is soft.
if ur into architecture, the dingzhou confucian temple is the obvious one but the pagoda at kaiyuan temple is better from a distance, across the river. there's a small bridge west of it, u can frame the whole thing with some reeds in the foreground. that's my go-to when i want something less postcard-y.

For a quick and authentic lunch, head to Laomao Dumpling House at 88 Zhongshan Road. Their pork and chive dumplings cost 12 CNY for a large portion. Alternatively, try the nearby Dingzhou Donkey Meat Sandwich stall at the corner of Zhongshan and Jiefang Road, a local specialty for around 8 CNY.

After lunch, walk 15 minutes to Dingzhou Museum at 66 Zhonghua North Street. It opens at 9 AM and closes at 5 PM (last entry at 4:30 PM), with free admission. The museum houses the famous Jade Clothes Sewn with Gold Thread from the Han Dynasty, so allocate at least 2 hours here.

Begin Day 2 at Dingzhou People's Park (Renmin Gongyuan) on Zhongshan West Road, which opens at 6 AM and is free. Spend an hour walking the lake and watching locals practice tai chi. Then take bus No. 1 (1 CNY) for 20 minutes to the Dingzhou New District Cultural Square.

At the Cultural Square, visit the Dingzhou Shadow Puppetry Museum at 12 Xinhua Road. It opens at 9 AM, tickets are 30 CNY, and a 30-minute show starts at 10 AM. You can also try manipulating the puppets yourself after the performance.

solid itinerary, i've done this exact route with visiting friends a few times and it works well. one thing the guide misses is the morning market scene near the confucian temple, if you get there before 8am there's a small alley off dongmen street with vendors selling fresh sesame cakes and hot soy milk for like 2 yuan each, way better than a sit-down breakfast.
for the kaiyuan pagoda climb, tbh the steps are narrow and uneven, not great if you have mobility issues or claustrophobia, but the view from the top is worth it if you can handle it. i'd also recommend the small calligraphy shop on the street leading up to the pagoda, the old guy there does custom name scrolls for 15 yuan and they make good souvenirs.
yeah this guide is pretty thorough, i grew up here and it covers the main stuff well. one thing i'd flag is the wanda plaza lunch on day 2, the food court is fine but if you walk two blocks east on zhonghua north there's a tiny place called li's noodle shop, no english sign, just a red banner. their dandan noodles are 10 yuan and way better than anything in that mall, cash only though
for the confucian temple, if you go on a weekday morning you might catch the old guys playing xiangqi under the big locust tree in the back courtyard. they won't mind if you watch, one of them taught me the basics when i was a kid. also the ticket price is 20 yuan now but they sometimes charge 15 if you go after 3pm, just ask at the window
i always tell visitors to grab a bag of the sesame seed cakes from the stall outside the confucian temple before heading in, they're like 1 yuan each and perfect for munching while you wander. also if you're into photography, the museum's jade burial suit is incredible but the lighting in the ceramic gallery is way better for photos around 2pm when the sun hits those windows just right
