ngl the Puning Temple area is worth going out of your way for even if you've seen other temples in Chengde. The big Guanyin statue inside is legitimately impressive, they don't let you take photos of it but that's fine because you'd never capture how massive it is anyway. I'd also swing by the little market street just outside the entrance, they sell these fried sesame cakes that are like 5 RMB and way better than anything you'll find in the city.

for the Imperial Summer Resort, the guide's right that it's a full day thing but I'd say skip the main palace area if you're short on time. The gardens and lake path are where it's at, the palace halls are mostly empty rooms with some furniture and the queue to get in is always long. Pack a picnic and find a bench near the willow trees on the south side, it's quiet and you can watch the ducks paddle around.

I've done the Jinshanling trip a few times and there's one thing this guide doesn't mention. If you go on a weekday, especially outside peak season, you can sometimes find yourself completely alone on the unrestored sections past the main watchtowers. That's the real magic of it. Just bring good shoes because those loose stones are no joke.

The donkey burgers on West Street are a solid recommendation. I'd add that the best ones come from the small hole-in-the-wall places near the Wulie River bridge, not the sit-down restaurants. They're about 8 RMB each and they grill the buns right there on the cart.

For the Imperial Summer Resort, skip the boat ride and walk the eastern path along the lake instead. You'll see the same views without the queue and you can stop at the Wenjin Ge library building which most tourists miss. It's a nice spot to sit and rest.

One place that often gets overlooked is the Saihanba National Forest Park, about three hours north of Chengde by car. It's a massive man-made forest with pine trees and meadows that feel a world away from the temple crowds, and the entrance is 130 RMB. The drive up through the mountains is scenic on its own, so it works well if you have a private driver for the day. Just pack a jacket because it stays cool even in summer, and the restaurant options up there are limited to basic noodle stalls near the parking lots.

solid guide, only thing id add is that the wechat mini program they mentioned works great but you gotta have wechat pay set up beforehand or itll just error out. and honestly if you're coming in peak summer the taxi queue can get long, might be worth booking the private transfer ahead just so youre not sweating outside

The guide's right about the 70 yuan fixed fare being solid, but one thing it doesn't mention is that some taxi drivers near the train station might try to add a surcharge if you're heading to the old summer resort area instead of just downtown. I've had drivers ask for an extra 10 yuan claiming it's "farther," even though it's barely a few blocks past the bus terminal. Stick to the agreed price or just walk a minute to hail a Didi instead. For the shuttle, the 20 yuan ticket is a steal, but if you're in a hurry, the bus can get stuck in traffic around Wulie Road during rush hour, so budget an extra 15 minutes.

good writeup, one thing to add - the bus terminal dropoff is actually right next to the 火车站 so if youre catching a train later that's clutch. also for the didi pickup zone its a bit confusing, its past the parking lot to the left, not right outside the terminal like taxis. i usually just grab the shuttle since its cheap and consistent, but if ur bags are heavy the 70 yuan taxi is worth it to avoid the walk to the bus stop
