🏯 Explore the Ancient City Wall
The Xi'an City Wall is one of the best-preserved ancient fortifications in China, and renting a bike to cycle the full 14 km loop is a must. It costs 45 CNY to enter and bikes are available for rent at 45 CNY for two hours. Go early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds and catch the sunset. The South Gate (Yongningmen) is the most popular starting point and is easily reached by Metro Line 2.

🗿 See the Terracotta Army
The Terracotta Army is about an hour's drive from the city center, and you can get there by bus 游5 (306) from Xi'an Railway Station for 7 CNY. Entrance is 120 CNY, and it's best to arrive right when it opens at 8:30 AM to beat the tour groups. Hire a guide or rent an audio guide to fully appreciate the history. Don't miss the bronze chariots in the exhibition hall.

🕌 Wander the Muslim Quarter
The Muslim Quarter is a bustling area near the Drum Tower, filled with food stalls and shops. Must-try snacks include roujiamo (Chinese hamburger), yangrou paomo (mutton soup with bread), and persimmon cakes. Prices are reasonable, with most snacks costing between 10 and 30 CNY. It's open daily from around 10 AM until late evening, and the best time to visit is after 5 PM when the street comes alive.

🏛️ Visit Shaanxi History Museum
The Shaanxi History Museum houses over 370,000 artifacts, including Tang dynasty treasures. Admission is free but you need to reserve tickets online in advance, especially during peak seasons. It's closed on Mondays, and opening hours are 9 AM to 5:30 PM. Take Metro Line 2 to Xiaozhai station and walk about 10 minutes.

⛲ Enjoy the Big Wild Goose Pagoda
The Big Wild Goose Pagoda is a Buddhist pagoda built in 652 AD to house sutras brought from India. Entry to the temple is 50 CNY, and climbing the pagoda costs an extra 30 CNY. The North Square has a musical fountain show at 8:30 PM daily (except Tuesdays), which is free to watch. It's a great spot for photos, especially at night when the pagoda is illuminated.

🍜 Taste Local Xi'an Cuisine
Xi'an is famous for its noodles and lamb dishes. Head to Yongxingfang or Huimin Street for a variety of local eats. Biangbiang noodles, a wide hand-pulled noodle, are a must-try, usually costing around 20 CNY. For a sit-down meal, try De Fa Chang Dumpling Restaurant near the Drum Tower, known for its dumpling banquet.

🎭 Watch a Tang Dynasty Show
The Tang Dynasty Music and Dance Show at the Shaanxi Grand Opera House is a colorful performance with traditional music and costumes. Tickets range from 200 to 500 CNY depending on seating. Shows usually start at 7:30 PM and last about 1.5 hours. Book in advance through your hotel or online platforms like Ctrip.

🚇 Getting Around Chang'an
Xi'an's metro system is efficient and covers most attractions. A single ride costs 2 to 8 CNY depending on distance, and you can use a transportation card or WeChat/Alipay for payment. Taxis start at 9 CNY for the first 2 km, but traffic can be heavy during rush hours. For short distances, shared bikes like Meituan and Hellobike are convenient and cost about 1.5 CNY per 30 minutes.

The guide covers the highlights well, but I'd push back a little on Yongxingfang for food. It's clean and photogenic but it's basically a curated food court, and the biangbiang noodles there run closer to 30 CNY. For the real thing I'd walk ten minutes west to the Sajinqiao area off Lianhu Road, where you'll find Uyghur bakeries, hand-pulled noodles for 12 to 15 CNY, and almost no tourists.

On the wall, one detail worth knowing is that the bike rental is per-person and they check your passport, so bring it. Also the loop is genuinely 14 km and takes about 90 minutes at a relaxed pace, so two hours is tighter than people expect if you stop for photos.

For the Shaanxi History Museum, the free tickets vanish fast but they also sell a 300 CNY special exhibition ticket that gets you in without the online scramble. I've used it twice when I forgot to book and never regretted it.

solid list, covers the main stuff. one thing id add is the city wall at night, after like 8pm when the lights come on its way less crowded & honestly better for pics than sunset, tho the bike rental stops around 8 so u gotta walk it. also the 游5 bus is fine but if ur going to terracotta on a weekend just take metro line 9 to huaqingchi then transfer, way less hassle with touts at the train station. and yeah book shaanxi history museum tickets like 3 days out on wechat, they drop at midnight & sell out fast in summer

Good writeup, the museum reservation point especially. One thing I'd flag for anyone planning around the Tang Dynasty show: the Shaanxi Grand Opera House performance is fine but it's very much a tourist production, and if you want something with more local flavor, the smaller theater at the Tang Dynasty Palace (唐乐宫) near the South Gate does a similar show with a dumpling dinner included, usually for less than the top-tier Opera House seats. Also worth knowing that the Big Wild Goose Pagoda fountain schedule changes in winter, they cut it down to weekends only once the cold hits, so don't plan your evening around it if you're there in December or January.

Shanghai hidden gems beyond the Bund?

Heading to Shanghai in two months and want to skip the tourist traps. Any underrated spots or local favorites i should check out? Heading to Shanghai in two months and want to skip the tourist traps. Any underrated spots or local favorites i should check out?

honestly skip the bund crowds and head to the former french concession around wukang road. grab a coffee at some random lane spot, the whole area has these old lane houses that feel way more real than the skyline. also check out the rock bund art museum near the south bund, it's in this old industrial building with killer views and barely any tourists last time i was there. if u want food, go to tianzifang but skip the main alleys and wander into the side lanes, you'll find a tiny dumpling place that's like 15 yuan for 10 pieces

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

if you're around on a weekend morning, hit up the antique market on dongtai road before it fully gentrifies. it's mostly gone now tbh but there's still a few stalls tucked near the intersection with liuhe road, you'll find old propaganda posters and weird mao-era knickknacks for like 20 kuai. also the shanghai natural history museum in jing'an is underrated, the building itself is this wild spiral shape and the dinosaur skeletons are legit impressive, plus it's like 30 yuan entry. for a quiet evening walk i'd do the suzhou creek path near the north bund but go west from the waibaidu bridge, past the old post office building, there's a stretch where the lights hit the water just right and nobody's around

yeah if you want something totally different check out the long museum (long museum west bund) it's this massive space with rotating contemporary art, way less crowded than the power station of art. also walk the suzhou creek trail near the north bund, it's kinda rough around the edges but you get these weird views of old factories mixed with new towers
