Best photo spots in Cencheng for a trip next month?
For old architecture at sunrise, head to the lanes around Qinglong Street before 6am. The shikumen facades catch the light from the east and you'll have the alleys mostly to yourself until the vendors start setting up around 7. If you want street stuff with actual life in it, the wet market off Renmin Road on Sunday mornings is worth the early start, though you'll need to be quick and unobtrusive since it's a working market, not a set.
If you're willing to go up rather than into the old streets, the rooftops along Baota Lane give you a clean look down over the tiled roofs, best about twenty minutes before sunrise when the mist still sits in the courtyards. Locals who shoot there climb the stairwell of the old textile building at number 14, it's technically residents only but nobody's ever stopped me if you're quiet and gone by 7. For street work, skip the main drag and walk the back lanes behind Dongmen Bridge on weekday mornings, that's where you get the delivery riders and breakfast stalls without a single selfie stick in frame.
The old canal quarter near Xiguan is worth a look, quieter than the usual spots.
