Old Market Hall area in Beijing 2026: what's there now?

Does anyone know if the whole building is slated for redevelopment, and whether the produce stalls that used to be inside have moved somewhere nearby? I'm weighing whether to stay in the neighborhood, so I'd like to hear from people who've watched it change.

Staying nearby still works if you value the hutong feel over a full-service market. For daily produce, the small grocery inside the hall covers basics, and there's a decent morning vegetable setup on Dongsi Beidajie near the hospital. I'd pick the west side of the neighborhood for quieter nights, since the coffee strip gets loud on weekends.

yeah west side is quieter but the loud part is really the stretch by the hutong mouth, not the strip itself, and mornings near the hospital get crowded with commuters

Most of the old produce vendors moved into the covered wet market on Chaoyangmen Inner Street, about ten minutes east. The building itself is in a slow renovation, not full demolition, so the coffee and grocery half will likely stay put through 2026.

The wet market move matches what I heard, though a few vendors actually landed at the Dongsi Nanxiaojie morning market instead. On the building, I'd add that the boarded section is the old meat and dry goods wing, and the staging permits on the hoarding run to late 2026.

Sounds right, weekday mornings are calmer there.

tbh the coffee half already feels settled, but did u hear the upstairs floor's still empty?

a couple of the fish guys actually set up at the little market tucked behind Dongsi Shitiao instead, cheaper rent i think

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down
Image tilla local ·

my barber mentioned those fish guys pay month to month there, so rent probably is the reason

arrow_drop_up 0 arrow_drop_down

Right, and I've heard two of them share a single stall there so they can split the rent.

Roughly 7am, before the school run.

Best sushi near Bluefin in Beijing 2026?

Bluefin's omakase is solid but the à la carte nigiri is where it's at, way better value. If you're near Liangmaqiao anyway, Sushi Kanesaka on the 3rd floor does a decent lunch set for around 200.

Agree on the nigiri. Sit at the counter, not a table.

Counter seats go first, ask for the end spot

arrow_drop_up 13 arrow_drop_down

Image myrta local ·

The 200 set is weekday only.

arrow_drop_up 12 arrow_drop_down

weekend lunch is closer to 280 i think

arrow_drop_up -1 arrow_drop_down

Kanesaka lunch needs booking a day ahead

Tbh the rice at Bluefin runs a bit warm for me, but their toro is worth the splurge at around 120 a piece if u go.

shari's seasoned warm on purpose, ask for it cooler

Book ahead if you're going on a Friday, walk-ins after 7pm usually get turned away. For a cheaper fix, the handroll counter at Sankei in Sanlitun does a set that won't wreck your week.

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down
Image fini local ·

sankei's handroll set is lunch only btw, evenings it's full omakase so budget double
