the real "unofficial curriculum" at buct is prob the 实验楼 basement crowd that basically runs their own side projects after hours, but nobody calls it a club, its just who u know. if ur friend was vague its cause the interesting stuff is tied to specific 课题组 & lab mates, not some named society. my advice is skip hunting for legends & just go to the 社团招新 fair in september, thats where u actually meet the ppl who know things
ur friend is prob talking about the 化协, the chemistry association, which has a rep for being way more hardcore than the name suggests. they run unofficial weekend experiments out at 昌平 or 房山 sometimes, and the older members basically gatekeep who gets invited. its not alchemy but the initiation vibe is real. also check out the 科幻协会 if u want weird late-night energy, they meet in a room off 主教楼 and do things like synth chem discussions at 2am
tbh the "secret society" thing at beijing unis is mostly just 老乡会 (hometown associations) and a few lab groups that basically live in the building, not some alchemy club. at buct specifically the chemistry kids pull all-nighters in the 化工楼 near 北三环东路, and yeah there are informal crews that form around a professor's project, but that's it. if u want the real underground vibe go find the 棋牌 rooms behind the dorm canteens, thats where the actual legends happen

best photo spots in beijing?
olympic forest park is slept on fr. the linden trees along the main axis go gold in late october and the bird's nest reflection in the lake at sunrise is nuts, barely anyone there on weekdays. also check out 798 art district on a weekday morning, the old factory pipes and graffiti make great contrast shots. tbh bring a wider lens than u think you need, everything in beijing is bigger than it looks in photos
everyone goes for the big landmarks but honestly the best shots i got were from the overpasses on the 3rd ring road at dusk, just traffic light trails with CCTV tower lit up in the background. also guomao at blue hour from the silk street footbridge, the CBD towers all glassy & orange, tripod helps cuz u need a slow shutter. one thing nobody mentions, air quality totally changes your photos so check the AQI app the night before, a clear day after rain is worth waiting for
For sunrise the Temple of Heaven east gate area is underrated, locals doing tai chi around 5:30am with the morning fog, way better than fighting crowds at Tiananmen. For sunset honestly just walk along the canal near Shichahai, the reflections off the water with the Drum Tower behind are hard to beat. Bring a tripod if you can, the good light only lasts like 20 mins this time of year.
