Piao Home Puzzle

The staff were amazing, breakfast was surprisingly good (those little baozi!), and the location was perfect for exploring the hutongs. But... the room keycard system was WILDLY inconsistent. Sometimes it worked, sometimes I had to get a new one, sometimes I had to knock really hard... and once, I think I accidentally unlocked someone else's room?! Seriously, what's the deal with those keycards? Is it just me, or is that a common Piao Home problem?

the accidental unlock thing is more common than people think, not just a Piao Home issue. those old locks default to a master code when the battery gets low, so if you held your card against the handle too long it can cycle through and pop a nearby door. next time, tap and pull away quick, don't leave it resting there. also mention it to the front desk so they swap the lock battery, they usually just reprogram the card instead of checking the actual hardware.

yeah the older Piao Home properties use those old Mifare cards and the readers near the stairwells get demagnetized constantly from being stacked next to each other at the front desk. one thing nobody mentions, the card reader on the ground floor is usually the weakest one, so if your room is up on 2 or 3 just walk up and use the door reader directly, works way more often. also if you're near the Beixinqiao branch, the front desk guy there keeps a stash of freshly programmed cards behind the counter, just ask for one thats been coded that day.

tbh the keycard thing is pretty common in older Beijing courtyard conversions. Piao Home's hutong spots are usually renovated siheyuan so the wiring is retrofitted and the readers get finicky in humidity. I stayed at one near Nanluoguxiang and the trick was keeping the card away from my phone, the magnet in the case kept wiping it. If it keeps failing just ask them to reprogram it at the front desk, takes like 10 seconds.

best photo spots in beijing?

heading to beijing in about 5 months and wondering where i should go for good photos. any favorite spots for early morning or sunset shots? heading to beijing in about 5 months and wondering where i should go for good photos. any favorite spots for early morning or sunset shots?

olympic forest park is slept on fr. the linden trees along the main axis go gold in late october and the bird's nest reflection in the lake at sunrise is nuts, barely anyone there on weekdays. also check out 798 art district on a weekday morning, the old factory pipes and graffiti make great contrast shots. tbh bring a wider lens than u think you need, everything in beijing is bigger than it looks in photos

everyone goes for the big landmarks but honestly the best shots i got were from the overpasses on the 3rd ring road at dusk, just traffic light trails with CCTV tower lit up in the background. also guomao at blue hour from the silk street footbridge, the CBD towers all glassy & orange, tripod helps cuz u need a slow shutter. one thing nobody mentions, air quality totally changes your photos so check the AQI app the night before, a clear day after rain is worth waiting for

For sunrise the Temple of Heaven east gate area is underrated, locals doing tai chi around 5:30am with the morning fog, way better than fighting crowds at Tiananmen. For sunset honestly just walk along the canal near Shichahai, the reflections off the water with the Drum Tower behind are hard to beat. Bring a tripod if you can, the good light only lasts like 20 mins this time of year.
