I've heard whispers about hidden study spots, secret passages, maybe even some forgotten archives... is that just a myth, or are there actually some less-known, cool spots within the library itself? I'm hoping to find a quiet corner to really lose myself in books for a few days. Any insider tips from those who've spent time there?

tbh the "secret passages" thing is mostly myth, but the library itself is worth the trip. it's the old building near the west gate, and the reading rooms on the upper floors are way quieter than the ground floor where everyone lines up for seats during exam season. if you want to actually disappear for a few days, go early, grab a spot by the window on the north side, and nobody will bother u. the archives are restricted unless you've got a student or faculty card, so don't count on wandering into those.

the old building gets all the attention but honestly the new library across the way is where i'd actually camp out. it's the squat glass building just south of the old one, way fewer tourists, and the fourth floor has these long tables that almost nobody uses. bring your passport if you're not affiliated, they sometimes let visitors in with ID at the front desk but it's hit or miss. also the cafe in the basement of the old building does a decent 美式 for like 12 kuai if you need a break

honestly most ppl miss the古籍部 on the third floor of the old building. it's not secret exactly but you have to ask at the desk and they only let a few people in at a time. no bags, pencil only, they give you these little foam book rests. if you read chinese even a bit it's worth it just for the atmosphere, wooden card catalogs and all.

the actual "hidden" thing is the study carrels along the east stairwell, floor 2 through 4. nobody queues for them bc they're tucked behind the stacks and there's no outlet. quietest place on campus imo. just dont go during 期末, the whole building turns into a war zone.

olympic forest park is slept on fr. the linden trees along the main axis go gold in late october and the bird's nest reflection in the lake at sunrise is nuts, barely anyone there on weekdays. also check out 798 art district on a weekday morning, the old factory pipes and graffiti make great contrast shots. tbh bring a wider lens than u think you need, everything in beijing is bigger than it looks in photos

everyone goes for the big landmarks but honestly the best shots i got were from the overpasses on the 3rd ring road at dusk, just traffic light trails with CCTV tower lit up in the background. also guomao at blue hour from the silk street footbridge, the CBD towers all glassy & orange, tripod helps cuz u need a slow shutter. one thing nobody mentions, air quality totally changes your photos so check the AQI app the night before, a clear day after rain is worth waiting for

For sunrise the Temple of Heaven east gate area is underrated, locals doing tai chi around 5:30am with the morning fog, way better than fighting crowds at Tiananmen. For sunset honestly just walk along the canal near Shichahai, the reflections off the water with the Drum Tower behind are hard to beat. Bring a tripod if you can, the good light only lasts like 20 mins this time of year.
