Huangshicheng is actually the old Ming dynasty imperial archive, not a castle, which is why the carvings feel off. Those symbols you saw are likely reign marks and Manchu script mixed with Buddhist lotus motifs, the Qing added a lot of that when they repurposed the site. Fwiw the staff at the Beijing Archives on Nanchizi Dajie might know more, its a 15 min walk east and they keep records on the place.
