Sichuan Heat?

I ordered the Mapo Tofu, thinking I could handle the spice... I was wrong. But wow, the flavor was incredible, even through the flames. Worth it? Absolutely. But my question is: are there any secret menu items or dishes the locals know about that aren't on the regular menu? I'm going back next week and need to conquer that heat!

They don't really do a "secret menu" in the Chinese restaurant sense, but you can definitely ask for gān biān (dry-fried) versions of stir-fries if you see something close on the menu. That cooking method concentrates the heat and flavor without extra sauce, so your mapo tofu won't be drowning in oil. Also, order a side of cold smashed cucumber with garlic and chili oil to eat between bites of the spicy stuff. It's not on the menu at most places but they'll make it if you ask, and it'll cool your mouth down better than water ever will.

Doubtful they'd have secret menu items not listed, especially a place that's already popular. Most places like that rely on their reputation and established dishes. Maybe try asking your server directly next time? They might know of something spicier or a less-known dish they could prepare. Or, look for a smaller, less-touristy place in a residential area; those sometimes have more unusual things. Good luck with the next round of fiery deliciousness!

Honestly, just ask for "jia ma" (加麻) when you order, means extra Sichuan peppercorns. Not really a secret menu thing but the numbing helps balance the heat way better than just spice alone. Also, most places by the Lama Temple will make you a side of just boiled greens with garlic if you ask nicely, it's not listed anywhere

olympic forest park is slept on fr. the linden trees along the main axis go gold in late october and the bird's nest reflection in the lake at sunrise is nuts, barely anyone there on weekdays. also check out 798 art district on a weekday morning, the old factory pipes and graffiti make great contrast shots. tbh bring a wider lens than u think you need, everything in beijing is bigger than it looks in photos

everyone goes for the big landmarks but honestly the best shots i got were from the overpasses on the 3rd ring road at dusk, just traffic light trails with CCTV tower lit up in the background. also guomao at blue hour from the silk street footbridge, the CBD towers all glassy & orange, tripod helps cuz u need a slow shutter. one thing nobody mentions, air quality totally changes your photos so check the AQI app the night before, a clear day after rain is worth waiting for

For sunrise the Temple of Heaven east gate area is underrated, locals doing tai chi around 5:30am with the morning fog, way better than fighting crowds at Tiananmen. For sunset honestly just walk along the canal near Shichahai, the reflections off the water with the Drum Tower behind are hard to beat. Bring a tripod if you can, the good light only lasts like 20 mins this time of year.
