Beijing ChemTech Food Scene?

Heard the campus is massive! My biggest worry is food, I'm a pretty picky eater, and I'm not great with Mandarin. Any recommendations on good, affordable eats near the university that aren't just the usual noodle stalls? Preferably something with pictures on the menu, lol. I'm planning on exploring the area around the campus a bit, too, so any hidden... not so hidden... local haunts nearby would be awesome.

Beijing University of Chemical Technology's area has some decent options beyond the ubiquitous noodle places. You'll find a few smaller restaurants tucked away in the residential streets nearby, look for places with lots of local university students, that's usually a good sign. Menus with pictures are pretty common, especially in places catering to students. Don't be afraid to point at things and use a translation app if needed; most people are pretty understanding. Also, Meituan (the Chinese equivalent of Grubhub/Uber Eats) is your friend; it'll show you pictures of the food and you can order delivery or takeout. Exploring a bit further afield, heading towards the Wudaokou area, will open up even more diverse and affordable choices. Good luck with the conference!

I'd say just wander into the campus cafeterias themselves, they're surprisingly good and cheap. The second floor of the main dining hall has a self-serve section where you grab a tray and point at dishes, everything's labeled with pictures and prices. You'll see students eating there all day, and nobody will look at you funny for using your phone to translate. Just avoid the lunch rush around 12, it gets packed.

The North Third Ring Road side of the campus has a cluster of small canteen-style spots inside the residential compounds, and they're gold for picky eaters. Look for the ones with the glowing food display cases near the entrance, you just point at what you want, no Mandarin needed. My go-to is a dumpling place called 老边饺子 on the east side of the campus, they have a laminated menu with actual photos of every filling, and the pork and chive ones are unbeatable for about 15 yuan a plate.

If you're willing to walk fifteen minutes toward the Heping West Bridge, there's a Muslim restaurant on the corner of Xiaoguan Street that does amazing beef noodles and lamb skewers, and their menu is fully pictorial. The owner is used to foreigners and will happily gesture you through the ordering process, just avoid the spicy options unless you're into that, the "not spicy" version is still pretty mild but safe.

For a slightly different vibe, the Wudaokou area everyone mentions is fine, but honestly the stretch of shops right outside the south gate of the campus has a Korean-style fried chicken place that gets overlooked. It's on the second floor of a nondescript building, look for the neon sign, and they have picture menus with combo sets that include fries and a drink for under 30 yuan. It's a nice break from Chinese food if you get tired of it, and the staff are used to pointing at

olympic forest park is slept on fr. the linden trees along the main axis go gold in late october and the bird's nest reflection in the lake at sunrise is nuts, barely anyone there on weekdays. also check out 798 art district on a weekday morning, the old factory pipes and graffiti make great contrast shots. tbh bring a wider lens than u think you need, everything in beijing is bigger than it looks in photos

everyone goes for the big landmarks but honestly the best shots i got were from the overpasses on the 3rd ring road at dusk, just traffic light trails with CCTV tower lit up in the background. also guomao at blue hour from the silk street footbridge, the CBD towers all glassy & orange, tripod helps cuz u need a slow shutter. one thing nobody mentions, air quality totally changes your photos so check the AQI app the night before, a clear day after rain is worth waiting for

For sunrise the Temple of Heaven east gate area is underrated, locals doing tai chi around 5:30am with the morning fog, way better than fighting crowds at Tiananmen. For sunset honestly just walk along the canal near Shichahai, the reflections off the water with the Drum Tower behind are hard to beat. Bring a tripod if you can, the good light only lasts like 20 mins this time of year.
