The food was incredible, fresh noodles practically pulled from the air, but trying to find my way back to my Airbnb using only the local maps was... a challenge. Seriously, those little side streets all look the same! So, my question is: what's the best non-tech way to navigate Dong Tiejiangying without ending up three hours from where I started?

yeah the numbering system works but only on the main hutong, the side alleys are chaos. my trick is to look for the roof tiles, seriously. most hutongs have either grey or black tiles but dong tiejiangying has a few with green glazed ones near the temple intersection, super easy spot from a distance. also the old man who sells candied haw sticks at the third alley from the north end is there every afternoon, he's like a living landmark

The key is to pay attention to the building numbers, which are actually sequential along the main hutong. Dong Tiejiangying has a logical numbering system if you look for the small white or blue plaques on the walls. Once you know you're at number 45 and your Airbnb is at 12, you just follow the numbers in the right direction. I also find the corner convenience stores helpful as markers since they're usually at the intersections of the bigger lanes.

honestly just pick one main street and stick to it as your spine. dong tiejiangying has that one wider lane with the old tree and the red lantern shop, if you always find that first you can zigzag out from there without getting totally lost

olympic forest park is slept on fr. the linden trees along the main axis go gold in late october and the bird's nest reflection in the lake at sunrise is nuts, barely anyone there on weekdays. also check out 798 art district on a weekday morning, the old factory pipes and graffiti make great contrast shots. tbh bring a wider lens than u think you need, everything in beijing is bigger than it looks in photos

everyone goes for the big landmarks but honestly the best shots i got were from the overpasses on the 3rd ring road at dusk, just traffic light trails with CCTV tower lit up in the background. also guomao at blue hour from the silk street footbridge, the CBD towers all glassy & orange, tripod helps cuz u need a slow shutter. one thing nobody mentions, air quality totally changes your photos so check the AQI app the night before, a clear day after rain is worth waiting for

For sunrise the Temple of Heaven east gate area is underrated, locals doing tai chi around 5:30am with the morning fog, way better than fighting crowds at Tiananmen. For sunset honestly just walk along the canal near Shichahai, the reflections off the water with the Drum Tower behind are hard to beat. Bring a tripod if you can, the good light only lasts like 20 mins this time of year.
