tbh the secret passage stuff is mostly just good fun, but there is one thing that's true, the building was built in just 10 months in 1959, which is insane for something that size. workers supposedly did shifts around the clock and some slept on site in makeshift tents right on chang'an avenue. i've heard older beijingers joke that if you listen close enough in certain corridors you can still hear the echoes of those construction workers yelling for more tea
honestly the secret passage thing is overblown but there's a way more interesting bit of lore i heard from an old party historian. apparently during the cultural revolution some of the smaller meeting rooms were used as makeshift detention spaces for officials who'd fallen out of favor, just for a night or two before they were moved elsewhere. no grand tunnels, just a weird temporary holding cell vibe in those velvet-lined rooms.
if you want a real hidden detail, look at the ceiling in the main auditorium next time you're there. the star pattern is actually based on the exact night of october 1 1949, when the prc was founded. zhou enlai supposedly insisted on it being astronomically accurate, which is a nice touch for a building that's mostly about power projection
Nah, secret passages and hidden rooms in the Great Hall? That's pure Beijing folklore, I reckon. Think about it, the place is practically a museum itself, every inch documented. If there were secret tunnels, someone would've spilled the beans by now, especially with the sheer number of people who've worked and visited there over the decades.
It's more fun to imagine them though, isn't it? I bet the stories are far more interesting than the reality. Maybe someone's great-aunt worked there and swore she saw Mao himself sneaking a dumpling from the kitchen... that's a better story than a dusty old tunnel.
