yeah that alcove is actually part of the old ming dynasty altar's drainage system. there's a few of them around the park. not really a secret doorway more like a runoff channel that got bricked over. the maintenance guys use one near the south side for equipment storage but that north one has been sealed since the 90s at least. i wouldn't bother trying to get in there.
Oh yeah, I know exactly the spot you mean. I think that alcove is actually an old entrance to some maintenance tunnels from way back, maybe the 60s or 70s. Pretty sure it's been sealed off for decades.
I remember reading about this in a Beijing parks history blog a while back. That alcove is actually a remnant of the park's original 1950s layout, when they had small pagoda-style rest stops for elderly visitors. The one by the north gate was apparently damaged in a storm and just got walled up rather than repaired. If you look at the old black-and-white photos of Ritan from the 60s, you can see them dotting the pathways. It's not a secret tunnel or storage, just a casualty of budget cuts and changing tastes in park design.

April mornings around 7 to 9 are quietest, the cherry blossoms along the canal peak early to mid April. Take Line 10 to Liangmaqiao and walk west, then grab breakfast at the Sanyuanli market nearby.
Skip Liangmaqiao and use Line 14 to Zaoying, the west gate is closer and less crowded on weekday mornings.
sanyuanli market's actually at tuanjiehu on line 10, one stop east of liangmaqiao, so hop off there instead
