It was gorgeous, the trees were amazing, and I even saw some people practicing Tai Chi. But the weirdest thing happened, I stumbled upon this little secluded area, almost hidden behind some overgrown bushes, with these strange, ornate carvings on a small, crumbling stone wall. Nobody else seemed to be around. They weren't typical Chinese carvings

the old guys doing water calligraphy are a good bet for stories, but honestly the best info comes from the lady who sells roasted sweet potatoes from a cart near the north gate around sunset. she's been there for like 20 years and knows every nook of that park. she told me those carvings were part of a small family shrine that got hidden during the cultural revolution, not a proper temple. the mongolian script on the back is actually a poem, not a dedication, which is pretty rare for beijing. grab a sweet potato from her, they're 8 kuai and worth it, then ask her about it.

Those carvings are part of an old stone pavilion base from the late Qing, but most people walk right past it. If you go back, check the backside of the wall where the bushes are thinnest, there's a faint inscription in Mongolian script that nobody ever notices. The park guards usually don't care if you poke around back there as long as you're not trampling the plants.

fwiw the sweet potato lady's story might be half true but the poetry guy has his dates wrong too. i talked to a professor from peking university who was sketching in that corner last fall, he said those carvings match a style that was popular among manchu families in the 1910s, not the 1800s. the mongolian poem is real but it's actually a fragment from a longer work about a concubine, which is why it's tucked away like that. if you want the real deal, go on a sunday morning around 10, there's usually an old man in a blue cap playing erhu near the east gate who used to work at the palace museum, he knows more than both of them combined

Beijing gym membership scam 2026?

Is that a normal Beijing fitness contract or a known prepaid scam where the place closes in a few months? Would rather pay monthly if that's an option.

Get the contract in Chinese and check for a 7-day cooling-off clause, that's your legal out if they push back.

Important detail: the 7-day cooling-off only applies if u signed the model contract, so check the 合同编号 against the 市监局 template before relying on it

8k upfront near Local House is a red flag, that area has seen a few prepaid gyms vanish. Ask for the nian ka price breakdown and pay monthly or quarterly instead. I'd check the place has been open at least a year before handing over that much.

Also check the business license for 北京 prefix and a registered capital above 1 million, since shell gyms set up cheap and fold fast.

yeah and check the 经营范围 line, gyms sometimes register as "consulting"

Ask for the 转卡 fee in writing, usually 10 to 20 percent.

arrow_drop_up 23 arrow_drop_down

Mine wanted 15 percent plus a new member signed before releasing the 卡, so get that condition spelled out too.

10 to 20 is optimistic tbh, the big chains around sanlitun quote 20 to 30 now & some only release the card if u bring a replacement member. pin down the exact number & that condition before paying anything

arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down

true, the year-open test matters more than the price. check 天眼查 for 经营异常 or 行政处罚 records before signing anything. even a 3k deposit stings if they fold in spring
