Lost in Machikou's Hutongs

The locals were incredibly friendly, always ready with a smile and directions (though sometimes those directions... well, let's just say I ended up in some unexpectedly charming alleyways). I found a tiny teahouse tucked away, where an old woman served the most amazing jasmine tea. But my question is this: What's the story behind the faded mural near the old well, the one with the phoenix and the... what were those creatures? It felt ancient, like it held some forgotten legend. I couldn't find any info about it online.

honestly the phoenix and suanni combo is pretty rare, usually you'd see them separate. there's a retired history teacher named mr. zhang who drinks tea at the machikou public garden every morning around 9, he's got notebooks full of old hutong stories. if u ask him about the well he might even show u his photos from the 90s when the mural was more intact, before someone painted over part of it during a restoration attempt. the library near beixinqiao has a collection of oral histories too but you gotta ask specifically for the machikou files, they don't put them on display

Those creatures you saw were likely suanni, one of the nine sons of the dragon. They're often carved on old wells and incense burners, meant to guard against fire and bad water. The phoenix paired with them is unusual, which makes me think it might be a late Qing addition from when the well was restored after the Boxer Rebellion. If you head to the Capital Museum's archive room, they have a set of hutong survey maps from the 1950s that document every well and mural in Machikou. The librarian there, Ms. Chen, can pull them for you if you mention the old well near the cross street with the yellow door.

That phoenix mural has been a local landmark for decades. The creatures you saw were probably qilin, the hooved chimeras that signify justice and prosperity. There's an old story that the well was built during the Ming dynasty and the mural was painted to protect the water source from evil spirits. The old woman at the teahouse might know more if you ask her directly, she's been in that hutong since the 1980s and her family has records going back generations. The municipal archive near Dongsi does have a collection of hutong folklore, but you'd need to go in person and ask for the Machikou section specifically.

olympic forest park is slept on fr. the linden trees along the main axis go gold in late october and the bird's nest reflection in the lake at sunrise is nuts, barely anyone there on weekdays. also check out 798 art district on a weekday morning, the old factory pipes and graffiti make great contrast shots. tbh bring a wider lens than u think you need, everything in beijing is bigger than it looks in photos

everyone goes for the big landmarks but honestly the best shots i got were from the overpasses on the 3rd ring road at dusk, just traffic light trails with CCTV tower lit up in the background. also guomao at blue hour from the silk street footbridge, the CBD towers all glassy & orange, tripod helps cuz u need a slow shutter. one thing nobody mentions, air quality totally changes your photos so check the AQI app the night before, a clear day after rain is worth waiting for

For sunrise the Temple of Heaven east gate area is underrated, locals doing tai chi around 5:30am with the morning fog, way better than fighting crowds at Tiananmen. For sunset honestly just walk along the canal near Shichahai, the reflections off the water with the Drum Tower behind are hard to beat. Bring a tripod if you can, the good light only lasts like 20 mins this time of year.
