that courtyard is actually one of the last surviving bits of the original shuchun garden from the late ming, not just yan garden. the inscription is a line from a poem by a local scholar-official who retired there, something like "in stillness one finds the way" but the characters are worn because they used a softer stone. if you go around the back side of the hui tong library, there's a smaller plaque in the wall that explains it was a private meditation spot for the garden's owner, you have to crouch a bit to read it though
oh man i know exactly which courtyard you mean. it's near the old hui tong library right? that spot used to be part of the yan garden from the ming dynasty, way before peking u took over. the inscription is classical chinese, something about "cultivating virtue through silence" or similar, a lot of those old scholar gardens had those. honestly most students just walk past it, but if you go early morning when the light hits the ivy it's like stepping into a different century.
i think that spot was part of a smaller scholar's residence from the qing dynasty actually, not ming. the inscription might be a quote from the analects, some students in the archaeology club told me about it once

The Summer Palace at sunset is hard to beat, especially from the long corridor looking west across Kunming Lake. You get the reflection of the pagoda on the water and the hills turning orange behind it. If you want something more gritty, the hutong rooftops around Nanluoguxiang offer a different perspective, just find a bar or a hostel with a roof terrace around dusk.
