Best day trips from Baotou?
If you've got a full day and want to skip the tourist crowds, head east toward the Wudangzhao Monastery complex. It's about an hour and a half from Baotou, and the drive through the mountains is pretty nice. The monastery itself is one of the few remaining Tibetan Buddhist sites in the area that actually feels lived in, not just a museum piece. You can walk the whole thing in a couple hours, then grab lunch at one of the small noodle places just outside the entrance. They do a decent bowl of he le mian for around 15 yuan.
fwiw wula mountain is a solid option if you want something different from grasslands or desert, about an hour east of baotou. the hiking trails are pretty decent and you get views of the yellow river from up top, plus the temple up there is actually pretty quiet since most tourists skip it
if you're into food, the area around wula has some legit lamb skewer spots on the way back, way better than the tourist trap stuff near the grasslands. just don't expect much english out there, bring a translation app or write down what you want
honestly the grasslands are doable but you gotta leave early. xilamuren is the closest, about 1.5 hours north, but it's pretty touristy with all the horse riding touts. if you want something more chill, head to gegen tala instead, it's a bit further but way less crowded and the grass is greener.
desert wise, kubqi is your best bet for a day trip. it's about 2 hours south of baotou. you can do the sand sliding and camel rides but skip the overpriced jeep tours if you're on a budget. bring your own water and snacks, stuff there is marked up like crazy.

Baotou has an efficient bus system with fares starting at 1 RMB; routes 1, 2, and 5 connect major districts. Taxis are affordable with a base fare of 8 RMB, but avoid rush hour (8:00-9:00 and 17:00-18:30) when traffic is heavy. For grassland trips, book a minibus from the Kundulun Bus Station for around 50 RMB per person.

For dinner, try the night market on Tuanjie Street in Qingshan District, open from 18:00 to 23:00, where you can sample lamb skewers and milk tea. fwiw the wudangzhao monastery is worth the trip but try to get there right when it opens at 9, by 11 it gets swarmed with tour groups and the chanting in the main hall gets drowned out by selfie sticks. also if u take a taxi from the city center the driver might try to charge u 80 RMB instead of 60, just point at the meter and they'll cave. for day 1 lunch on tuanjie street the noodle shops are all decent but the one with the red awning next to the pharmacy does a mean lamian with beef that's only 15 RMB, way better than the pricier spots further down
solid tips already, one thing i'd add is that the rare earth hi-tech zone on day 3 is worth a quick stop at their little visitor center too, its free and they have this cool 3d model of the whole mining process. also if youre around wanda plaza in the morning, grab a jianbing from the cart near the east gate, its like 8 RMB and way better than the hotel breakfast options
nice guide, covers the main spots well. one thing that's missing is the baotou zoo if you're into that kinda thing, it's near the steel museum and only 20 RMB, they have a few decent animals and a small lake area that's chill to sit at for a bit. also for day 3 if the steel museum is too industrial for your taste, the rare earth hi-tech zone has a free visitor center with a 3d model of the mining process that's actually pretty cool, plus the gift shop sells these little rare earth magnets that make good souvenirs for like 10 RMB each. the bus to the grassland from kundulun station is fine but the minibus option is worth the extra 30 RMB for the comfort and speed, especially if you're not used to bumpy roads
