πŸ•Œ Explore Ailan Mubage Mosque
The Ailan Mubage Mosque, located at 88 Ailan Road, is the spiritual heart of the community and welcomes visitors outside of prayer times. Entry is free, but modest dress is required; women should cover their hair and arms. The mosque's intricate wood carvings and peaceful courtyard offer a glimpse into local Islamic heritage. It's open daily from 9 AM to 5 PM, except during Friday prayers.

πŸ›οΈ Shop at Grand Bazaar
The Grand Bazaar on Market Street is a bustling market where you can find everything from handwoven rugs to spices and traditional clothing. Vendors are friendly, but bargaining is expected; start at half the asking price. It's open daily from 10 AM to 8 PM, and the best time to visit is early morning to avoid crowds. Don't miss the section selling local dried fruits and nuts.

🍒 Taste Local Street Food
Food stalls along Food Alley serve up delicious kebabs, samosas, and hand-pulled noodles for just a few yuan. Try the lamb skewers at Uncle Li's stall, a local favorite for over 20 years. Most stalls operate from 11 AM to 10 PM, and a full meal costs around 30 to 50 yuan. Vegetarians can enjoy fried tofu and vegetable pancakes.

πŸ›οΈ Visit Ailan Museum
The Ailan Museum, at 12 Culture Square, showcases the region's history with artifacts dating back to the Silk Road era. Admission is 20 yuan for adults and 10 yuan for students; it's free on the first Tuesday of each month. The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 9 AM to 4:30 PM. Highlights include ancient manuscripts and a model of the old caravan routes.

🌳 Relax in People's Park
People's Park, located at the north end of Central Avenue, is a green oasis perfect for a leisurely afternoon. Locals gather here for tai chi in the morning and socialize in the evening. The park features a small lake where you can rent a paddle boat for 30 yuan per hour. It's open 24 hours, but the boat rental operates from 9 AM to 6 PM.

🎭 Watch Cultural Performances
The Ailan Cultural Center hosts traditional music and dance performances every Friday and Saturday at 7:30 PM. Tickets cost 50 yuan and can be purchased at the door or online. The shows feature local Uyghur and Han artists, offering a vibrant mix of cultures. Arrive early to get a good seat, as the venue fills up quickly.

🚌 Getting Around Town
Ailan Mubage is compact and walkable, but public buses are cheap at 2 yuan per ride. Bus routes 1, 5, and 8 connect the main attractions. Taxis start at 8 yuan and are readily available, though they can be scarce during rush hours. For a scenic ride, take the number 5 bus along the river promenade.

πŸŒ™ Enjoy Evening Activities
As the sun sets, the Night Market on River Street comes alive with food stalls, crafts, and live music. It runs from 6 PM to midnight, and the atmosphere is lively and safe. For a quieter evening, stroll along the illuminated riverbank or visit a traditional teahouse like Cha Yuan at 45 River Road, open until 11 PM. Many restaurants offer outdoor seating, perfect for people-watching.

the museum tip is right but nobody ever mentions the little tea houses tucked in the lanes behind it, not Cha Yuan, the unmarked ones where old guys play chess all afternoon. sit down, order a pot for like 5 yuan and you get refills until you leave, nobody rushes u

also on the cultural center shows, the friday one is mostly for tourists but saturday draws more locals, different vibe. and eat before u go, nothing open near there after 9

one correction on People's Park, the paddle boats are gone as of last summer, they drained that section for repairs and i dont think theyre back yet. still worth the walk tho

Solid writeup overall, you covered the essentials well. One thing I'd flag is the timing on the Night Market: it technically runs until midnight but most of the good food stalls start packing up around 10:30, so if you're going for the lamb skewers and samsa, get there by 8 at the latest. After 10 it's mostly crafts and the music stage, which is fine but a different experience.

On the mosque, the guide says 9 to 5 but the courtyard is actually accessible a bit earlier in summer, I've wandered in around 7:30 and nobody minded as long as you're quiet and dressed properly. Mornings there are calmer than afternoons when tour groups tend to show up.

arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down

this is a solid list, hit most of the stuff i'd tell a friend. one thing missing tho: the old town core around Kunlun Lane, just off Ailan Road behind the mosque. its easy to walk past but thats where the actual mud-brick houses are, some families have been there for generations. i'd go around 5 or 6pm when the light hits the walls and kids are out playing, way more interesting than the museum tbh.

also heads up on the Grand Bazaar, fridays its packed after noon prayers so morning is def teh move like u said. and the number 5 bus along the river is nice but it only runs til like 9pm, so dont count on it for the night market.

πŸ—ΊοΈ Day 1: Old Town Core
Start at Ailan Mubage Central Square, where the 9 AM fountain show marks the beginning of your day. From there, walk five minutes north to the History Museum (open 10 AM to 6 PM, 30 yuan entry). After lunch at the Night Market (open from 11 AM), spend the afternoon exploring the Artisan Quarter along Stone Street. End with sunset views from the Old Town Wall, a 15-minute walk from the square.

πŸš‡ Getting Around Efficiently
Ailan Mubage's metro system has three lines; a single ride costs 3 yuan and a day pass is 15 yuan. Buses 12 and 45 connect the Old Town to the Riverside District in about 20 minutes. Taxis start at 8 yuan, but traffic peaks between 5 PM and 7 PM, so plan accordingly. Walking between neighborhoods like the Old Town and Central Market takes only 10 to 15 minutes.

🏞️ Day 2: Riverside and Gardens
Begin at Riverside Park at 8 AM for a peaceful stroll along the promenade. The Botanical Gardens open at 9 AM (20 yuan entry) and are a 10-minute walk from the park's north gate. Have lunch at the Riverside Food Court, where local noodles cost around 25 yuan. In the afternoon, visit the Modern Art Gallery (free entry, closed Mondays) and then take a 15-minute bus ride to the Sun Island night market for dinner.

πŸ›οΈ Day 3: Cultural District
Head to the Cultural District early; the Folk Museum opens at 9 AM and offers free guided tours at 10 AM and 2 PM. Next, the Handicraft Center on Weaver's Lane lets you watch silk weaving demonstrations every hour. Lunch at the Tea House Courtyard serves traditional set meals for 40 yuan. Finish your day at the Opera House for a 7 PM performance; tickets range from 80 to 200 yuan.

🍜 Where to Eat Well
For breakfast, try the steamed buns at Morning Glory Stall near Central Square (open 6 AM to 10 AM, 5 yuan each). The Night Market on Food Street has grilled skewers and dumplings from 6 PM to midnight, with most dishes under 20 yuan. For a sit-down meal, the Old Town Kitchen on Stone Street serves hearty stews for around 50 yuan per person. Vegetarians will find good options at Green Leaf Cafe on Riverside Road.

πŸ’‘ Practical Tips for 2026
Purchase a transit card at any metro station for 20 yuan (includes 10 yuan credit) to save time. Most museums and galleries are free on the first Wednesday of each month. Carry cash for small vendors, as some stalls do not accept cards. Download a translation app since English signage is limited outside major attractions.

πŸŒ™ Evening Highlights
On Day 1, catch the light show at Central Square at 8 PM, which is free and lasts 30 minutes. Day 2 offers a night cruise on the Ailan River; tickets cost 60 yuan and depart every 30 minutes until 10 PM. For Day 3, the Opera House performance ends around 9 PM, after which you can walk to the nearby Night Market for a late snack. All evening activities are within a 10-minute walk or a short taxi ride from major hotels.

One thing the guide gets right is the Folk Museum timing, but it undersells the 10 AM tour. The guide who runs it spent twenty years as a weaver before moving into curation, and she'll walk the group through the pattern on the Han-era silk fragment in room three in a way that makes the Handicraft Center demo feel like a warm-up. Get there by 9:45 to claim a spot, they cap it at about fifteen people and locals fill the early tour.

On food, I'd push back gently on the Night Market as the default dinner. It's fine, but the alley behind the Tea House Courtyard has three or four family kitchens that only open around 6 PM and serve the same grilled skewers for a third less, and you'll actually get a seat. Cash only, as the guide notes.

One correction worth flagging: the Old Town Wall sunset spot gets genuinely crowded after 5 PM in summer, and the west stairs close at 6:30 sharp. If you want the view without the scrum, the rooftop of the small bookshop on Weaver's Lane lets you up for the price of a coffee, and you're facing the same direction.

Nice work pulling all this into one place, the day-by-day structure is genuinely useful. One thing I'd flag on the practical side: the transit card at 20 yuan is fine but you can also just load a phone transit app at the Central Square station kiosk, which skips the queue and works on buses 12 and 45 too.

On Day 2, the Riverside Food Court is okay but the noodle stalls one block inland on Fisherman's Row do the same beef noodles for 15 yuan instead of 25, and they're open later. Locals eat there after the gardens close.

A small correction on the Sun Island night market timing. It's quieter before 7 PM and the seafood skewers sell out fast on weekends, so if you're going for the good stuff, aim for 6:30 rather than 8.

the metro day pass thing is worth checking before you commit. as of last month theyre doing a 3 day tourist card for 35 yuan at the service desk in Central Square station, not just the single day one. nobody mentions it unless you ask. covers buses too which the regular day pass doesnt.

on the wall sunset, agree its packed, but theres a quieter angle. walk past the main stairs to the old water gate on the north side, maybe 8 min further. no view of the whole old town but you get the river and the wall lit up together, and theres basically nobody there.

also fwiw the botanical gardens are free before 9am if you just want to walk through, the 20 yuan is only for the glasshouse section. saved me a bit on day 2.
