It's a bit of a scene but a fun one, and I'd walk down Rua Augusta after for cheaper caipirinhas.

yeah the Augusta walk is the move, though honestly I'd cut over to Baixo Augusta for the dive bars instead of staying up top

If you do go, avoid weekends because the train gets packed and the return times are limited. The Paranapiacaba station stop is a short walk from the old town, but the fog rolls in fast so bring a jacket even in March. Order the pastel and a caldo de cana at the little stalls near the funicular, that's the real local move.
