Sao Paulo dating norms for newcomers 2026

Do people mostly meet through apps, or is it still common to strike up a conversation at a cafe like Pedacinho de Amor Sandra & Cia? What surprised you most about the pace and norms compared to dating back home?

Apps dominate, but Paulistanos still flirt hard at bar tables in Vila Madalena, and the pace is slower than you'd expect.

honestly the slower pace threw me too, but what really got me was how much people lean on WhatsApp voice notes before even meeting up

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

The voice note thing is real, but it's usually a test run before they commit to a two hour dinner across town in Itaim. I've noticed people send a short audio first to check your Portuguese and your tone before wasting a Saturday night.

Voice notes often come with a "bom dia" at 7am, so the rhythm is set before you even reply.

Some people send a photo of their dog first, priorities.

yeah slower pace matches what i saw visiting. one thing tho, a lot of first meets happen in shopping malls like Eldorado or Ibirapuera on a Sunday, way more low key than a bar. coffee dates in Pinheiros also big for a first look.

agree on the slower pace, but tbh the flirting is way more indirect than folks expect, lots of lingering eye contact before anyone actually speaks

Is that area fine to walk around that time, or should I stick to certain streets? Also is the brunch worth it or are there better spots nearby?

Sunday 10am near Sé is quiet but keep to the Rua Direita and Praça do Patriarca side and skip empty cross streets; brunch itself is mediocre so I'd walk to Rua São Bento instead.

arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down

Yeah that side is calmer, but I'd add the Pátio do Colégio stretch, it's short and feels fine in daylight. Fwiw I'd grab coffee around Praça da Sé and eat later, the sit-down brunch places there are pretty forgettable.

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

The Sé metro exits spit you onto the wrong side, use the Anhangabaú one.

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

Fair warning most sit-down spots between Sé and São Bento don't open till 11 on Sundays so plan the walk first
