I'd walk it only via the Sé metro exits and keep your phone out of sight; a chopp there runs maybe R$8 to R$12.

honestly the wifi in centro cafes is hit or miss, some spots are fine for calls but a lot throttle you. i'd book a coworking day pass for anything important, there's decent ones around Republica. on time difference: europe is 4 to 5h ahead, so most people i know start early and knock off by 3 or 4. se square is nice to sit but it's more touristy than laptop friendly, too much foot traffic.

yep, praça da sé gets sketchy after dark too

The cathedral area itself is fine for a quick sit but I wouldn't plan a work session there. Better bet is the coffee places around Praça da República or up toward Santa Cecília, quieter and people actually work there. For calls, test the wifi before you commit, order something first and run a speed test. Time difference with Europe is rough, most folks I know just start at 6 or 7 and are done by early afternoon.

starting at 6 works til the call quality dips once everyone in the building is on the same router around 10
