fwiw the address bit matters more than people say. you can use a friend's place or even a hotel, but teh Receita folks at the Sao Paulo office sometimes want a comprovante. get ur CPF online through the e-CPF portal first if u can, it saves a trip.

honestly the comprovante thing tripped me up too. i've seen them accept a rental contract in someone else's name if you're staying with friends, though it prob depends on the atendente. keep a printed copy either way.

Starting at the consulate is fine but the CPF only activates once Receita Federal stamps it here, so plan a visit anyway.

yeah but the CPF itself is valid from the moment it's issued at the consulate, the in-person visit is only for the card if you want one.
