Getting a CPF number in Sao Paulo 2026: stuck on the process

I've read that the Receita Federal handles it but I can't work out whether I need to book an appointment at a cartorio or if I can start it online from abroad. Has anyone done this recently and can walk me through the actual steps?

The e-CPF route via the app is worth trying first, you can often kick it off abroad and finish at a Banco do Brasil branch after you land. Bring your passport and proof of address, theyre strict about the address doc.

Agree on the address doc, but ngl the CPF number itself is free, so don't let anyone charge u for it.

Finishing at a branch only works if you started the online application first and got a protocol number, so don't just walk in cold. Passport plus a recent utility bill in your name is what they actually check.

Appointment slot at Receita Federal, not the bank, for the protocol.

Just don't expect the branch to sort out any errors, they'll send you back to the Receita Federal queue.

Worth knowing: the CPF itself is free, so if anyone quotes you a fee for the number alone, that's an agent or translator charging for their time. You'll need a responsible party with a Brazilian address for the initial application, which is where most people get stuck before arriving. A friend or your future employer usually handles it.

Your employer can request it through e-CAC too.

I'd probably just check the Receita Federal site directly, the online option changes a lot.

I went last year and the pintado na brasa was the standout, though the menu shifts seasonally so check what's running. It's in Pinheiros, easy off the Fradique Coutinho station, so not really out of the way.

Booked three weeks out last time and still got a 21h30 slot only, so plan the reservation early. The moqueca and the pirarucu dishes held up better than the meat, honestly. Worth the detour if you're already spending an evening central.

the tutu de feijao side, don't skip it

Agreed, though I'd ask them to go easy on the farofa on top or it dries the whole thing out. Their tutu comes with a soft poached egg if you ask, which pulls it together. Worth the small extra.

no clue tbh, just book ahead if u go
