Is this a scam? Restaurant cover charge in Sao Paulo 2026

stopped at a place called Novo Sabor and they added a cover charge per person before we even sat down. is that normal in Sao Paulo or was I being scammed? tbh I've never seen it added automatically li… stopped at a place called Novo Sabor and they added a cover charge per person before we even sat down. is that normal in Sao Paulo or was I being scammed? tbh I've never seen it added automatically like that

couvert artistico is a legal charge in SP, usually R$5 to R$15 per person & it should be listed on the menu or posted at the door

arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down

yeah and by law it has to be optional, so if they spring it on you without listing it you can just ask them to take it off

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

asking them to take it off works better before you order, since some places get weird about it once the food's already out.

Also ask for the menu, it's usually printed near the bottom

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

right, and the R$5 to R$15 range is per person even if you just grab a coffee. saw it printed at the bottom of the menu at a boteco in Pinheiros last time i was there. if its not posted anywhere they prob just made it up

normal if its on the menu, otherwise ask to remove it

I went last year and the pintado na brasa was the standout, though the menu shifts seasonally so check what's running. It's in Pinheiros, easy off the Fradique Coutinho station, so not really out of the way.

Booked three weeks out last time and still got a 21h30 slot only, so plan the reservation early. The moqueca and the pirarucu dishes held up better than the meat, honestly. Worth the detour if you're already spending an evening central.

the tutu de feijao side, don't skip it

Agreed, though I'd ask them to go easy on the farofa on top or it dries the whole thing out. Their tutu comes with a soft poached egg if you ask, which pulls it together. Worth the small extra.

no clue tbh, just book ahead if u go
