The guide is solid, but it misses one of my favorite spots. In the Porto da Pedra neighborhood, there's a little place called Tia Nena's on Rua General Belarmino that does an incredible caldo verde on cold evenings. It's only R$12 a bowl and comes with chunks of calabresa sausage and a side of fresh bread. I've been going there for years and the recipe hasn't changed once.

Also, if you're at the Feira de SΓ£o GonΓ§alo on Sunday, don't just stick to the pastel stands. Walk toward the back where the older lady sells bolinho de bacalhau from a metal tray. They're R$6 each and she fries them fresh while you wait, much better than the pre-made ones you find at the front stalls.

honestly this guide is spot on, especially Bar do ZΓ© for feijoada. one thing i'd add is that on weekdays they have a cheaper version for like R$25 but it's not as loaded. also if you're in AlcΓ’ntara for Cantinho do Sabor, walk two blocks down to Rua SΓ£o Pedro where there's a guy selling espetinho de coraΓ§Γ£o on a little grill cart after 7pm, R$5 each and they're way better than most churrascarias around here. the guide's prices are pretty accurate but i've seen the moqueca at Sabor da Terra creep up to R$55 on weekends, so keep that in mind.

yeah this is a really good breakdown, Bar do ZΓ© is definitely the move for feijoada. one thing i'd add is that if you're in the city on a friday night, hit up the area around PraΓ§a do Jardim Catarina. there's a guy named Seu Jorge who sets up a little churrasquinho on the corner of Rua Almirante Alexandrino, he does these massive espetinhos de picanha for R$10 each and they're grilled over actual charcoal, not gas. way better than the stuff you get at the fancier places in Centro

also for anyone reading this, the moqueca at Sabor da Terra is legit but honestly i prefer the one at Restaurante do Carlinhos on Rua do RosΓ‘rio, it's R$45 and comes with a side of pirΓ£o that's way creamier. just get there before noon on weekends or you'll be waiting forever

For a proper no-frills lunch, head to Bar do David near the main square. It's a tiny spot that does an incredible moqueca de peixe for around 40 reais, served with rice and pirΓ£o. Dinner wise, you can't go wrong with a rodizio de churrasco at Churrascaria Nova Brasilia on Rua Doutor Nilo PeΓ§anha, it's about 60 reais per person and the meat keeps coming until you wave the white flag. The portions at both places are generous so come hungry.

march is a good time to catch the tail end of summer produce so hit up a feira livre early in the morning, the one on rua doutor getulio vargas has fresh aipim and pastel de feira that beats any restaurant. for dinner, the boteco do jorge on rua coronel moreira cesar does a mean bolinho de bacalhau and ice cold chopp, it's packed with locals every night and the vibe is exactly what you want. skip the fancy places, the real flavor is in the small bars where the owner remembers your order

honestly just wander around the centro area around lunchtime and follow the smell of grilled meat. there's a bunch of tiny lanchonetes that do espetinho de carne with farofa for like 15 reais, you'll know it's good if there's a line of construction workers
