heading to Joao Pessoa in about 5 months & trying to figure out a realistic daily budget for food and getting around. is 200 reais a day enough or should i plan for more heading to Joao Pessoa in about 5 months & trying to figure out a realistic daily budget for food and getting around. is 200 reais a day enough or should i plan for more

200 reais covers food and buses fine if you eat at self-service places, but Uber at night will eat into it, so bring closer to 280.

yeah the night rides are what gets you, especially from Tambau back to wherever ur staying. also add a bit for the bus card top up, those little fares sneak up on u over a week

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

night bus runs are thin after like 11 so u end up paying for a car anyway, budget that in

arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down

280 sounds right, add a bit for the Mercado da Torre snacks

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

plus the 5pm surge when everyone leaves the beach

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

self-service lunch spots near Lagoa charge by weight, cheap

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

280 feels right tbh, id also tack on a bit for the odd acai or beer at the kiosks over a week, those add up fast. taxis at the rodoviaria when u arrive can sting too if ur bus lands late

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

the beach kiosks charge tourist prices, walk two blocks inland

Manaíra, the parallel streets behind the promenade

🗺️ Day 1: Historic Center
Start your trip in the historic center, where colonial architecture and colorful facades line the streets. Visit the São Francisco Cultural Center (Rua São Francisco, 280, open Tue-Sun 9am-5pm, R$ 10) and the nearby São Pedro Church. For lunch, try the traditional 'tapioca' at Tapiocaria do Centro (Rua Duque de Caxias, 150), a local favorite.

🌅 Day 1: Sunset at Jacaré
In the late afternoon, head to the Jacaré Beach boardwalk (Avenida Beira Rio, Cabedelo) to watch the famous sunset with the 'Bolero de Ravel' played by a saxophonist on a boat. The show starts around 5pm, and it's free. Arrive by 4:30pm to get a good spot. Afterward, enjoy dinner at a nearby kiosk serving fresh fish.

🏖️ Day 2: Tambaú and Manaíra
Spend the second day on the urban beaches of Tambaú and Manaíra, which are connected by a scenic boardwalk. Rent a beach chair and umbrella for about R$ 20, and try the coconut water from the vendors. For lunch, visit the Mercado de Artesanato de Tambaú (Avenida Epitácio Pessoa, 1500) for local crafts and snacks. In the evening, stroll along the beach and dine at a seafood restaurant like Mangai (Avenida Epitácio Pessoa, 1000).

🚌 Day 3: South Beaches
On your final day, take a bus or drive south to the less-crowded beaches of Penha and Jacumã. The trip takes about 45 minutes from Tambaú. At Penha, visit the Penha Church and the lookout point for panoramic views. For lunch, try the 'peixada' (fish stew) at a beachside restaurant in Jacumã. Return to the city in the late afternoon to pack or relax.

🚕 Getting Around
The city has a reliable bus system, but for convenience, use ride-hailing apps like Uber or 99, which are affordable and widely available. A typical ride within the city costs R$ 15-25. The historic center is walkable, but for beaches, plan for 20-30 minutes of transit. Always carry small bills for buses and tips.

💰 Local Prices
Meals at local restaurants cost between R$ 30-60 per person, while a beach kiosk snack is around R$ 15. Attractions are generally cheap, with most museums under R$ 10. Budget about R$ 150-200 per day for food, transport, and activities. Cash is accepted everywhere, but cards are common in larger establishments.

🌙 Best Evening Spots
For nightlife, head to the Avenida Epitácio Pessoa area, where bars and live music venues line the beach. Try the 'Forró' at Espaço Cultural José Lins do Rêgo (Rua Abdias Gomes de Almeida, 800) on weekends. If you prefer a quieter evening, watch the sunset from the Ponta do Seixas, the easternmost point of the Americas, and enjoy a caipirinha at a nearby bar.

solid plan honestly, the jacaré sunset is a must but get there even earlier than 4:30 if it's a weekend, the boardwalk fills up fast and the good kiosk spots go quick. one thing the guide missed is the pontal de jacaré boat ride itself, it's like R$ 10 per person and they take u right up to the sax guy, way more immersive than watching from shore. for day 2, skip mangai if u want something local, try camarões at the end of av epitécio, their shrimp in coconut sauce is insane and the view of tambaú from the deck is better. also, if u're up for a longer day 3, keep going past jacumã to tabatinga, the cliffs there are unreal and there's a little beach bar with the best caipirinhas i've had in the state, just ask the uber driver to wait, it's worth the extra 15 min drive

The itinerary is solid, I've done almost the exact same route. One thing I'd add is to try the crab at Jacaré before the sunset show, the kiosks right on the boardwalk serve it fresh and it's way better than the fish. Also, if you're at Tambaú on a Sunday, the feirinha (street fair) along the boardwalk has great local snacks and crafts, it's more lively than the Mercado de Artesanato on that day. For the south beaches, skip the bus and just split an Uber with someone, it's about R$ 40 to Jacumã and saves you a lot of waiting around.

yeah this guide is pretty spot on, i'd just say don't sleep on the bus to jacumã if ur on a budget, it's like R$ 5 and drops u right at the main beach road. also for day 1, the são francisco center is worth the R$ 10 but go right when it opens, by 11am the tour groups flood in and it gets hard to actually enjoy the tiles. and if u got time at night, the forró at espaço cultural is fun but it's more of a local crowd, bring cash for
