I was grabbing ingredients for a barbie, and I swear, the guy behind the counter knew more about the best cuts of lamb from @Sydney's farmers markets than a butcher! My question is, do they have those amazing passionfruit cheesecakes every day, or is it just a lucky dip? Seriously considering making a special trip back just for a slice...

If you're heading over on a Saturday anyway, the Waverton shops are dead easy to combine with the Coal Loader walk, ten minutes down Balls Head Rd and you've got a decent coffee and a harbour view to eat the cheesecake by. I'd skip the supermarket run though, the IGA up at Crows Nest is fine but you're paying North Shore convenience prices for something that's been sitting in a freezer. Better bet is to just ring the grocer direct around 9am and ask if the delivery's landed, saves you the trip if it hasn't.

thursdays and saturdays is right but theyre usually gone by lunch, i went in at 1ish once and got the last slice lol. if u cant make it the iga in crows nest sometimes stocks the same brand in the freezer section near the ice cream, not the same as fresh but does the job. also worth knowing the bloke takes card now, used to be cash only for ages

the friendly grocer on bay rd is solid but if ur chasing passionfruit cheesecake specifically, the bakery two doors down does a version that honestly beats it, theyre open from 7 & sell out by like 10 most saturdays. the grocer counter guy is a legend tho, he put me onto a lamb shoulder from the growers market at carriageworks that was unreal for a slow roast. id just ask him straight up when the next cheesecake delivery lands, he wont bullshit u

Newtown's worth a look if you dont mind being a bit further out. The train from Newtown station to Central is like 5 mins and runs constantly, and King Street is basically one long food strip, Thai, Vietnamese, Turkish, whatever u want at 10pm. Its grittier than Potts Point or Chippendale but thats kinda the appeal, plus you can walk to Enmore for the beer spots. Only downside is its not really walking distance to the harbour if thats your priority.

Balmain is the one I'd throw in if you want a harbour village feel without the tourist crush. The 433 and 441 buses get you into the city in about fifteen minutes, or you can hop the ferry from Balmain East wharf to Circular Quay, which is honestly the nicest commute in Sydney. Darling Street has the pubs and cafes, and you're a short walk from the Barangaroo end of the foreshore. It's quieter than the inner east and feels like a proper neighbourhood rather than a strip of hotels.

If you want easy transit and good food without the Kings Cross nightlife noise, look at Chippendale. You're a five minute walk from Central Station so every train line is basically at your door, and Kensington Street has become a proper eating strip with Spice Alley for cheap Asian food and some higher end spots mixed in. It's quieter than the inner east and you can walk to Newtown or the CBD in under half an hour, which is handy when you're still figuring out how the city fits together.
