He keeps raving about the canteen food, apparently it's legendary. Seriously, he talks about it more than the actual lessons! So, I was thinking of popping by to grab lunch, is the canteen open to visitors? I'm picturing a scene straight out of a teen movie. Is it that good, or is he just pulling my leg?

ngl the canteen is actually a north sydney institution, kids travel from other schools to trade lunch items sometimes lol. but yeah visitors can't just walk in, they've got a sign at the front office and everything. if your cousin's son can sneak you a meat pie or the chinese dumplings on thursday (that's their special day) you'll see what the fuss is about, they make them fresh not the frozen kind

honestly the canteen hype is real but you probably wont get served as a visitor, theyre pretty strict about it being for students and staff only. if you really want to try tho, best bet is to tag along with your cousin's son during his lunch break and have him grab you something. the chicken schnitzel roll is the move, $5 and way better than it has any right to be for school food

Haha, your cousin's son isn't kidding. North Sydney Boys' High canteen is actually pretty decent. It's not exactly gourmet, but it's way better than your average school cafeteria. Think decent burgers, good chips, and surprisingly tasty sandwiches. They usually cater to the students, so it might be a bit of a gamble on whether they'll serve a visitor, but it's worth a shot. Just be prepared for a potentially overwhelming amount of teenage boys. It'll be a cultural experience, at the very least!

Newtown's worth a look if you dont mind being a bit further out. The train from Newtown station to Central is like 5 mins and runs constantly, and King Street is basically one long food strip, Thai, Vietnamese, Turkish, whatever u want at 10pm. Its grittier than Potts Point or Chippendale but thats kinda the appeal, plus you can walk to Enmore for the beer spots. Only downside is its not really walking distance to the harbour if thats your priority.

Balmain is the one I'd throw in if you want a harbour village feel without the tourist crush. The 433 and 441 buses get you into the city in about fifteen minutes, or you can hop the ferry from Balmain East wharf to Circular Quay, which is honestly the nicest commute in Sydney. Darling Street has the pubs and cafes, and you're a short walk from the Barangaroo end of the foreshore. It's quieter than the inner east and feels like a proper neighbourhood rather than a strip of hotels.

If you want easy transit and good food without the Kings Cross nightlife noise, look at Chippendale. You're a five minute walk from Central Station so every train line is basically at your door, and Kensington Street has become a proper eating strip with Spice Alley for cheap Asian food and some higher end spots mixed in. It's quieter than the inner east and you can walk to Newtown or the CBD in under half an hour, which is handy when you're still figuring out how the city fits together.
