Sun was shining, birds were chirping, the usual. But I noticed something weird, a little hidden alcove, almost like a tiny grotto, tucked away behind a big fig tree. It was completely empty except for a single, smooth, grey stone. No markings, nothing. Just...there. Anyone else ever seen this? What's the deal with that rock?

i've lived in north sydney my whole life and never noticed that alcove, which is kind of wild cause i walk through mater gardens all the time to grab a coffee at the little cafe on the corner. my mum actually worked at the hospital in the 90s and i just texted her about it, she said they used to joke it was a troll stone from some kids' playground that got relocated during a reno. no idea if that's true but it's a lot less mystical than the nurse story. either way, next time i'm there i'm definitely poking behind that fig tree

the hospital maintenance guys have a little shed near there and one of them told me it's actually a survey marker from the 60s, they used to put those plain stones in when they were mapping out the gardens for the new wing. i think it's just functional but i like imagining someone carried it there for a reason, feels more intentional that way. if you're into weird garden stuff though, check out the old fig tree near the harbour end, there's a carving of a koala in the trunk that nobody talks about

yeah i know exactly the spot you mean, it's kind of hidden behind that big fig near the maintenance shed. pretty sure that stone's been there for years, i remember seeing it back in 2019 when i was cutting through to the park. some of the older locals reckon it's a meditation stone left by a nurse who worked at the hospital in the 80s, she used to sit there on her breaks. no idea if that's true but it's a nice story either way

Newtown's worth a look if you dont mind being a bit further out. The train from Newtown station to Central is like 5 mins and runs constantly, and King Street is basically one long food strip, Thai, Vietnamese, Turkish, whatever u want at 10pm. Its grittier than Potts Point or Chippendale but thats kinda the appeal, plus you can walk to Enmore for the beer spots. Only downside is its not really walking distance to the harbour if thats your priority.

Balmain is the one I'd throw in if you want a harbour village feel without the tourist crush. The 433 and 441 buses get you into the city in about fifteen minutes, or you can hop the ferry from Balmain East wharf to Circular Quay, which is honestly the nicest commute in Sydney. Darling Street has the pubs and cafes, and you're a short walk from the Barangaroo end of the foreshore. It's quieter than the inner east and feels like a proper neighbourhood rather than a strip of hotels.

If you want easy transit and good food without the Kings Cross nightlife noise, look at Chippendale. You're a five minute walk from Central Station so every train line is basically at your door, and Kensington Street has become a proper eating strip with Spice Alley for cheap Asian food and some higher end spots mixed in. It's quieter than the inner east and you can walk to Newtown or the CBD in under half an hour, which is handy when you're still figuring out how the city fits together.
