**🏛️ Start at Dutch Square** Begin your Melaka visit at Dutch Square (also called Red Square), where the Stadthuys and Christ Church stand out in their distinctive crimson paint. The square is free to wander, but the Stadthuys museum charges RM10 for adults and is open daily from 9am to 5pm. Insider tip: arrive before 9am to beat the tour buses and get clear photos of the clock tower. From here, you can easily walk to the Melaka River and Jonker Street. **🛶 Cruise the Melaka River** The Melaka River Cruise offers a 45-minute boat ride from the Taman Rempah jetty near the Maritime Museum. Tickets cost RM30 for adults and RM15 for children, with boats running from 9am to 11pm. The evening cruise is particularly magical, as the riverside buildings are lit up with colorful murals and lights. Insider tip: buy your ticket online in advance to skip the queue, especially on weekends. **🍜 Eat Your Way Down Jonker** Jonker Street (Jalan Hang Jebat) is the heart of Melaka's food scene, especially during the night market on Friday and Saturday evenings from 6pm to midnight. Must-tries include chicken rice balls at Hoe Kee (Jonker Street) and cendol at Jonker 88, which often has a long line but moves fast. Insider tip: go early (around 5:30pm) to avoid the biggest crowds and secure a table at popular stalls. Prices are reasonable, with most dishes under RM10. **🏰 Explore A Famosa Ruins** A Famosa, the remains of a Portuguese fortress built in 1511, is one of the oldest surviving European architectural remnants in Asia. The site is free to visit and open 24 hours, though the small museum inside charges RM5. Insider tip: visit in the late afternoon when the light is golden and the heat has subsided. Nearby, you can also see the famous St. Paul's Church on the hill, which offers panoramic views of the city. **🕌 Discover Kampung Kling Mosque** Kampung Kling Mosque on Jalan Tukang Emas is a fascinating blend of architectural styles, including Hindu, Sumatran, and Chinese influences. It's free to enter, but visitors must dress modestly and remove shoes. Insider tip: the mosque is less crowded than the nearby Cheng Hoon Teng Temple, so it's a peaceful spot to learn about Melaka's multicultural heritage. Opening hours are from 9am to 5pm, except during prayer times. **🖼️ See the Street Art** Melaka's street art scene has exploded in recent years, with vibrant murals scattered around the old town. The most famous is the 'Melaka River' mural by local artist Charles Cham, located along the river near the Jonker Street bridge. Insider tip: rent a bicycle (about RM10 per day) to cover more ground and discover hidden alleyways with smaller artworks. The best time for photos is early morning when the light is soft and the streets are quiet. **🛍️ Shop at Jonker Street Market** The Jonker Street Night Market (Pasar Malam) runs every Friday and Saturday from 6pm to midnight, offering everything from souvenirs to local snacks. Insider tip: arrive hungry and pace yourself, as there are dozens of stalls selling treats like pineapple tarts, durian puffs, and grilled seafood. Prices are negotiable, so don't be afraid to haggle politely. The market is cash-only, so bring small bills. **🚌 Getting Around Melaka** Melaka's historic center is compact and best explored on foot, but you can also use the Panorama Melaka bus, which costs RM2 per ride and covers major attractions. For a more personalized experience, hire a trishaw (cycle rickshaw) for about RM40 per hour; these are decorated with lights and play music. Insider tip: avoid renting a car, as traffic and parking in the old town can be a nightmare. Grab (ride-hailing) is also widely available and affordable.
