**🍲 Essential Vallenato Dishes** Start your culinary journey with the holy trinity of Valledupar cuisine: sancocho de gallina, mote de queso, and carne en vara. Sancocho de gallina is a hearty hen soup with yuca, plantain, and cilantro, best enjoyed at traditional restaurants like La Vaca Loca (Calle 16 #9-45, Centro). Mote de queso is a creamy yam and cheese soup, often served with rice and avocado. Carne en vara is slow-roasted beef marinated in beer and spices, a staple at roadside stalls along the Vía a Patillal. **🥩 Top Restaurants for Meat** For a sit-down feast, head to El Mochuelo (Carrera 9 #16-20, Centro), a Valledupar institution since 1975, where the carne en vara platter for two costs around 80,000 COP. Another favorite is La Brasa Costeña (Calle 30 #14-45, Barrio Los Mayales), known for its churrasco and grilled chicken, with mains from 35,000 to 55,000 COP. Both places get busy after 7 p.m., so arrive early or expect a wait on weekends. **🌮 Street Food and Snacks** Valledupar's street food scene shines at night, especially around Parque de la Leyenda Vallenata and the Mercado Público (Calle 12 #8-30). Look for arepas de queso (2,500 COP), empanadas de carne (3,000 COP), and the local favorite, pastel de arroz, a fried rice and meat pocket for about 4,000 COP. The best stalls set up after 5 p.m. and stay open until midnight, particularly on weekends. **🐟 Seafood by the River** Though inland, Valledupar gets fresh river fish like bocachico and cachama, often prepared frito or en leche de coco. Try El Rincón del Pescador (Calle 44 #26-15, Barrio Dangond), where a whole fried bocachico with patacón and salad costs around 45,000 COP. The restaurant opens daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and the riverside terrace fills up on Sunday afternoons. **🍰 Sweet Treats and Desserts** Save room for Vallenato sweets like enyucado (cassava and coconut cake), cocadas (coconut candies), and dulce de leche cortada. Visit Dulcería La Vallenata (Calle 15 #7-50, Centro) for a box of assorted treats starting at 15,000 COP. For a modern twist, Heladería La Matica (Carrera 6 #14-30) serves artisanal ice cream in flavors like corozo and tamarind for 8,000 COP per scoop. **🍺 Where Locals Drink** Food and drink go hand in hand in Valledupar, especially during the Festival de la Leyenda Vallenata in April. Head to Calle 16 (La Calle del Sabor) in Centro, where bars like La Cumbiamba (Calle 16 #8-22) serve cold Aguila and Costeñita beers for 4,000 to 6,000 COP. Many spots also offer picadas, shared platters of fried meats and plantains, for around 30,000 COP. **💰 Budget and Mid-Range Eats** You can eat well in Valledupar for under 20,000 COP at lunchtime. Menú del día (set lunch) spots like Comidas Rápidas El Buen Sabor (Calle 30 #12-40) offer soup, rice, meat, and juice for 12,000 to 15,000 COP. For mid-range, restaurants like La Puerta del Sol (Carrera 9 #17-10) serve à la carte mains from 25,000 to 40,000 COP, with air-conditioned seating and Wi-Fi. **🚌 Getting Around for Food** Most food destinations cluster in Centro and Barrio Dangond, easily reached by taxi for 8,000 to 12,000 COP from anywhere in the city. Mototaxis are cheaper at 4,000 to 6,000 COP but less comfortable. If you're staying near Parque de la Leyenda Vallenata, you can walk to several street food stalls and casual eateries within 10 minutes.
