**🏞️ Start at the Waterfall** Begin your visit at Cachoeira do Abaeté, a stunning 45-meter waterfall about 8 km from the town center. The trailhead is off MG-220, and the short hike takes about 20 minutes through lush Atlantic forest. Pack a swimsuit, as the natural pool at the base is perfect for a refreshing dip. Entrance is free, but parking costs R$ 10. **🏛️ Explore the Historic Center** The town's historic center clusters around Praça da Matriz, where the Igreja Matriz de São José stands as a beautiful example of colonial architecture. Wander the cobblestone streets to see colorful 19th-century houses, many now housing small artisan shops. The Museu Histórico Municipal, at Rua do Rosário 45, offers a glimpse into local history with free entry on Sundays. **🥾 Hike the Serra da Canastra** Abaeté is the gateway to the northern edge of Serra da Canastra National Park, known for its dramatic cliffs and diverse wildlife. The Cachoeira do Cerrado trail is a moderate 6 km round trip that rewards you with panoramic views of the canyon. Guided tours leave from the park entrance at 8 AM and cost R$ 60 per person, including a packed lunch. Book ahead during the dry season from May to September. **🚣 Paddle the São Francisco River** The São Francisco River forms the western boundary of the municipality, and kayak rentals are available at Porto do Buriti, about 15 km from town. A two-hour self-guided paddle costs R$ 40 and lets you spot capybaras and kingfishers along the banks. For a more relaxed experience, take a traditional rabeta boat tour at sunset for R$ 70, which includes local snacks. Tours depart daily at 4 PM from the same dock. **🍴 Taste Local Flavors** Don't miss the regional cuisine, especially the famous pequi, a savanna fruit used in rice and chicken dishes. Try it at Restaurante Recanto do Pequi, located at Av. Getúlio Vargas 320, where a full meal costs around R$ 35. For dessert, head to Doceira Mineira on Rua das Flores 12 for traditional doce de leite and goiabada cascão. The market on Saturday mornings is also a great spot to sample fresh cheese and homemade preserves. **🎨 Visit the Artisan Cooperative** The Cooperativa de Artesanato de Abaeté, at Rua do Comércio 88, showcases the work of local artisans using materials like straw, clay, and wood. You can watch live demonstrations of basket weaving and pottery making from 9 AM to 5 PM, Tuesday through Saturday. Prices are fair, and a handwoven basket costs about R$ 25. This is a perfect place to pick up authentic souvenirs while supporting the community. **🌙 Enjoy Evening Entertainment** As the sun sets, head to Praça da Matriz, where locals gather for the nightly 'forró' dance sessions, especially on weekends. The square's food stalls serve caldo de cana and pastéis for around R$ 10. For live music, check out Bar do Zé, at Rua XV de Novembro 150, which features local bands every Friday and Saturday from 9 PM. Cover charge is R$ 15, and the caipirinhas are generously poured. **🚌 Getting Around** Abaeté is small enough to explore on foot, but for sights outside town, consider renting a car or using local moto-taxis. The bus station on Rua do Rosário connects to Belo Horizonte with several daily departures, taking about three hours. A moto-taxi ride within town costs R$ 5, while a trip to the waterfall runs around R$ 20. Rideshare apps are not yet available, so plan ahead for early morning excursions.
