**👋 Greeting Customs** When meeting someone for the first time, a firm handshake with eye contact is the standard greeting. Friends often greet with a casual 'G'day' or 'How are you going?' and a smile. Avoid overly formal titles; first names are used quickly even in professional settings. **🛕 Religious Site Rules** At St Mary's Cathedral in the CBD, dress modestly and remove hats before entering. Silence your phone and avoid photography during services. In the nearby Chinese Garden of Friendship, respect the tranquil atmosphere by not climbing on rocks or feeding the koi. **🍜 Dining Etiquette** In Sydney's many Asian restaurants, never stick chopsticks upright in a bowl of rice, as it resembles funeral rituals. Tipping is not mandatory; a 10% tip is appreciated for excellent service but not expected. When dining out with friends, it's common to split the bill evenly or pay for what you ordered. **👗 Dress Codes** Sydney is casual, but upscale venues like the Opera House Bar or Quay restaurant require smart casual attire. For beach visits, topless sunbathing is legal but rare; always cover up when leaving the sand. In business settings, a suit and tie are expected for men, and women wear professional attire. **📵 Public Behavior** Keep your voice at a moderate level on public transport; loud phone conversations are frowned upon. When taking photos, always ask permission before photographing strangers, especially Indigenous Australians. Queue politely for buses and at cafes, and never jump the line. **🚶 Queueing and Transit** Australians take queueing seriously; always wait your turn at bus stops, ticket counters, and ATMs. On trains, offer your seat to elderly, disabled, or pregnant passengers. When using escalators, stand on the left and walk on the right. **💬 Conversation and Humor** Australians appreciate directness and a good sense of humor, but avoid controversial topics like politics or religion unless invited. Self-deprecating jokes are well received, but never mock someone's accent or background. It's fine to ask about someone's weekend, but keep it light. **🎁 Gift Giving** If invited to a local's home, bring a small gift like flowers, chocolates, or a bottle of wine. Avoid extravagant gifts, as they may cause embarrassment. When giving flowers, avoid white lilies, which are associated with funerals.
