Valencia Etiquette 2026: What Not to Do: Valencia (2026)

**👋 Greetings and Social Norms** In Valencia, a handshake is common for initial meetings, but friends and younger people often exchange two cheek kisses (starting with the left). When you enter a small shop or cafe, it's polite to say 'Hola' or 'Buenos días' to the staff. Avoid using 'tú' with strangers older than you until they invite you to; use 'usted' to show respect. **⛪ Religious Site Etiquette** When visiting the Valencia Cathedral (Plaza de la Reina, open 10:00-18:30), cover your shoulders and knees, and remove hats. Speak in a low voice and do not use flash photography inside. During mass, tourists should stay in the back or wait until the service ends. **🍽️ Dining Dos and Don'ts** At restaurants, wait to be seated; do not grab a table yourself. Keep your hands visible above the table, not on your lap. Tipping is not mandatory, but leaving 5-10% for good service is appreciated. When sharing tapas, use the small plates provided, and never double-dip. If you're invited to a home, bring a small gift like wine or pastries. **👗 Dress Code Tips** Valencians dress casually but neatly for everyday outings. For dinner at upscale places like La Pepica (Paseo Neptuno 6), smart casual is expected: no beachwear or flip-flops. When entering a church or the City of Arts and Sciences, avoid overly revealing clothing. **🤫 Public Behavior Expectations** Keep your voice down on public transport and in residential areas, especially during siesta (14:00-17:00). Queue politely at bus stops and bakeries; cutting in line is frowned upon. When using escalators in the metro, stand on the right and walk on the left. **📸 Photography Rules** Always ask before taking photos of people, especially in markets like Mercado Central. Do not photograph inside museums where signs prohibit it, such as the Fine Arts Museum. Drones are banned in most of the city center without a permit. **💶 Paying and Tipping** In bars and cafes, it's common to pay as you go, not at the end. For meals, the person who invites usually pays, but groups often split the bill (a escote). Credit cards are widely accepted, but carry some cash for small purchases under 10 euros. **🚇 Transport Etiquette** On the metro, offer your seat to elderly or pregnant passengers. Validate your ticket before boarding; fines for not doing so start at 50 euros. When getting off a bus, say 'Gracias' to the driver, a common courtesy in Valencia.
